for an explanation of watch shrouds. Didn't yet find what I was looking for, but stumbled across this: mashable.com/2011/05/20/mutewatch/BTW, can anyone point me toward an explanation of the purpose of watch shrouds?

So I guess shrouds are purely decorative, kind of like non-functional pushers on watches that try to present a chrono look.

I found this as an explanation...
"I thought the shroud helps protect the bezel and prevent it from being moved inadvertently while underwater."
What do you think, possible?

What do you think, possible? Sounds reasonable to me as AFAIK shrouds are found mainly/only on dive watches.
