Most accurate japanese quartz watches

Besides the atomic casio's, does anyone know of any Japanese watches that are within COSC accuracy or +/- 10 seconds a year? I know the Bulova's are with precisionist, and Tissot has a COSC quartz...other than that I haven't found any others...

Just curious.

It seems like Quartz development has gone to the back of the bus and mechanical is the trend these days...but could it be argued that the best quartz watches were made in the 80's and ETA themoline up until ETA called it quits on selling movements?

Google 'the citizen watch' and 'Seiko 9f'. Or maybe 'haq quartz'

They're both not cheap.

The modern Citizen Chronomaster with the A660 movement is rated to +/- 5 seconds/year. The Seiko 9F movements are (according to my Google research) +/-10 secs/year.

I am pretty sure Bulova Precisionist watches are advertised as 10 seconds per year. When I had mine it did not live up to +/- 1 second per month but that does not mean it wasn't going to get back on track by the end of the year. I did not own it a full year to find out.

I think Seiko and Citizen both have radio-controlled movements, but in my humble opinion, RC does not make for an accurate movement.  It is the same as resetting any other movement so it is correct once every day.  If you disable the RC you have a movement with average accuracy.

No matter which one you choose YOU HAVE TO WEAR IT to keep the temp consistent otherwise you will not be happy with the results.

Or go old school and get a mid to late 1970's quartz.

My Meteorite 4004 keeps better time in the drawer than my 8F56's which are "supposedly" more accurate.

I have three 7548 based divers, all early 80's.  A 7548-700H meticulously serviced by Spencer Klein and keeps 0s deviation from reference.  A 7548-7000, purchased from Mike Mounce, no service history, and it loses about 1s per month.  I recently bought a 7548-700H on Craigslist and it is gaining about 2s per week but I expect after a cleaning and lubrication of the mechanical parts that will improve.

They just don't make them like that anymore.

I have a Tudor 7 jewel upgraded ETA movement that is thermocompensated and it is like Josh/cdgod said '70/'80s old school and it truly kept amazing time, like so close to reference atomic I got lost, but now it is in a re-dial/refurb project envelope.  Time to get that one going.

Saul you are right a newly regulated 7548 (got the timming pot) will run so close to 0 sec/month it isn't funny, but over time and temp and use I imagine it will stray more than 10-15 sec./year.  I mean the spec when new was 15 sec/month but then again they did not allow tinkerers to spend an hour fooling with it, either !

FYI:  When I set all 3 of my 7548s to each other they are many seconds apart in only a week or so.

The champion was my eco drive nighthawk. After a bit of research I found That some of the high end citizens, even without atomic time are often made with great skill and precision.
I think I just got lucky with the night hawk.

Definitely google HAQ- high accuracy Quartz.

Problem with quartz is there's no perceived value in them. They're a niche market thing. This is why SEIKO came up with the spring drive.

Try talking to a room of snobs and telling them how good your GS quartz is. You'll get a few chuckles and lots of derision.

At the end of the day though, having had loads of quartz watches apart, my take is that any mid range quartz watch is in every way "as good" as a mechanical watch, they simply have a different power source.

SEIKO only really run the 9F now for accuracy. They discontinued the mid range movements. You now have pretty much a 7N or 7T, then 9F.

And in some instances, such as the SBGX103, they are rated to +/- 5 seconds per year.

As mentioned before, here is my PSR-10.  I wanted one since they came out but never seem to pull the trigger.  I did recently on this one and paid almost twice the original cost for NOS example.

Yup. The Seiko twin quartz models in production from around 1980 took over from the single quartz King Q models and dependant on movement calibre were 5,10 or 20 seconds per year and had temperature compensation. Here's mine (-: Second one is beautifully dialled King Q, single quartz from '77
