I went visiting my watch guy at lunchtime and he's taken to digging some stuff out of his boxes of crap (perhaps motivated by my intense interest in his boxes of crap!) and putting a few things in his cabinet. Today there were three new digitals. This caught my eye. I've never seen one before. So it's a calculator watch. He said it would have come with a stylus to operate the tiny calculator buttons. All he's done for now is drop a battery in, and it fired up but the calc buttons didn't work. If someone comes into the store and expresses an interest in buying it he'll look at sorting it out. Since there are some digital and/or Citizen fiends here, it thought I'd share it. On another matter - we were talking Arnies. When he used to work at the Seiko service centre in the 80s they used to get offered the fully functional dealer sample/demonstrator watches (inc the Arnie) for $20!

I think that's pretty cool. Not necessarily user friendly, but cool. Does anyone know if they made an RPN calculator in these early watches?

These are an interesting take on the calculator watch and are quite collectable. I have one in good condition that I picked up a few years ago. There was also a scientific version of these that had a lot more buttons and functions but a very similar design.

Hi akable. I worked out you had one and sent you a message earlier. Do you have any insight into the potentially no-functional calculator buttons. Since the time was set correctly some of the buttons function. Is there a way to activate the calculator mode? I see 'C' - calculator? 'SW' - stop watch? 'S' - set? 'R' - ?

Great watch. Ha. No, I don't have one of these. The scientific version of these is pretty cool and hard to find.

I see 'C' - calculator? 'SW' - stop watch? 'S' - set? 'R' - ? Took me a little while to locate mine but I found it and it power right up. The S button as you guessed is for Set. Press it and each press will cycle through the seconds, minute, hours, month and date setting position. If your press the R (Reset?) key during the setting mode you are able to adjust the numbers for each of the areas. If R is pressed outside of the setting mode the top display changes between the time and the month/date display. If you depress the SW (switch?) button a 0 will appear in the lower display indicating the calculator function is active. Then use the other buttons to operate the calculator. The C and CE functions are the same as a normal calculator i.e. C is for clear and CE is for clear entry just deleting the last entry made. Also you may find it handy to depress the buttons with a pen or even a spring bar as the buttons do require a reasonable travel so may not be easy to operate just by pushing with your finger.

Thank you Anthony. akable. I'll go in and have a play with it hopefully it's all ok and I might make an offer in on. It's a fair chunk of steel.

It's alive! Thanks to akable for his instructions I was able to confirm the calculator function. The old fellow wasn't there today so I don't know what he'd like for it, but I'm considering adding it to my small collection of digitals - against my better judgement 😀

Yep, I don't know why that technology didn't catch on.

Looks like you could just stick a flat generic crystal in there. I still reckon the cooler quartz LCD stuff is the next frontier of collecting. It's alive! Looks that way from my photos anyway. Chances of finding correct crystal are practically nil I imagine.

Yeah, you'd be right. I can probably get it polished. It will look better but won't be totally flat. Looks like you could just stick a flat generic crystal in there.
