Well, you've named watches here ranging from $700 to $5,400. That's a pretty big range in price! I will say this: The SBDC051 is a big step up in build quality from the SKXs. It's constructed much better, it's heavier, has crisper lines, tighter tolerances, and just feels like a much nicer watch. You can also manual wind it if you need to, and the crystal is sapphire instead of hardlex Thanks That (the SBDC051) is the one I am being drawn to - but I do want to try it on first. And do you think its likely to pop us pre-owned at a discount to new? (Or have any been and gone that you know of). I've literally just sold a SBDC051 last week. Would have been happy for you to try it on. The quality of finish was excellent. Just looked odd on my skinny wrist. The Seiko Boutique in Knightsbridge should have them to try on.

Might I suggest an SKX007 as a daily diver? Great watch for the money, plentiful and bullet proof.
The new version of the Samurai is also pretty nice!

He already has a 009 and wants something a bit more sophisticated ...The Sammy is nice, but I found that the crown digs into the back of my hand. Still, if your anatomy fits the watch - go for it!

Kensington do have them in, and I hope to try them on soon to see what works best, if either. In the meantime, I am enjoying wearing the 6309, which is much easier to wear than I expected.

Its not that it is more sophisticated - the SKX 009 is such a cool watch, which I enjoy wearing. Its just I recently saw the 061, which I really liked the look and feel of, and as I investigated, then discovered the 051, which I possibly like more - and have just decided that if I can pick either of those up at a reasonable price, I would enjoy it as my daily modern watch. But I do need to go and see them both first. In the meantime, I am loving my 6309!

The SKX073 is also a nice one. Excellent homage to the 7002s.
If you're looking to go upscale, the Shogun is one that I'd love to own.

From my point of view there is no such thing as a daily watch. I have 16 watches that I alternate between. They come in all shapes and sizes from the very slim and petite Nomos Tangente to the big and bulky Seiko SBBN031. There are a couple of chronographs, various Seiko divers, and a few aviation/field watches.
I just wear which ever one takes my fancy on any given day. I think part of the pleasure of this hobby is being able to enjoy watches that range in price from about £60 up to about £1600 in my case, and a far greater price range in other peoples collections.
Obviously you do need to bear in mind water resistance if you are actually intending to go in the water. Other than that, I would just wear whatever you enjoy wearing.

Never have truer words been spoken here. I have bought literally dozens of watches with the rationalization that, "This will be my new daily watch. I will put the rest in the safe and just wear this one most of the time."
I usually make it about three days before putting something else on...

I want one watch that I love wearing and not concerned to wear swimming, particularly in the sea - so I suppose more a holiday watch (which I probably don't really need, as I tend to wear a plastic Casio - but just don't get a kick from it!) So these are the ones I tried - the blue one was the closest to an SRP777 they had in at that time, so I wanted to see if that might be an option. There was also one other which I think is reference SPB101J1, which could also be an option, asit was cheaper- and the salesperson seemed to feel it was a better watch than the 051 or 061? My take was, although I wanted to like the 051 the best, as I feel it just has that edge on design / aesthetics, and more of a 60s vibe to it, the 061 actually felt better on. I can't be sure, as they weren't sized to my wrist, but it just felt a little more comfortable. The Turtle watch (the blue "Save the ocean" SRP777), actually seems the best value, but doesnt have Sapphire and is also such a good homage to the 6309-7040 which I already have examples of, there doesnt seem much point. And I haven't seen any reviews of the SPB101J1 - but will have a closer look before I make a decision - although as I like the look of an older style watch, I think I may stick with hunting down the 061. The only issues with that I have heard is one of alignment, and bezel clicks - but I guess knowing that I can just check before I buy. The hands, I think I will just get used to!! Anyway, just thought I would share that with you, and welcome any feedback.

Botton and top look best on your wrist. Bottom particularly. The STO Turtle.. nope, not a fan. Jon here here has most of these and I think his grey dial one is the nicest.
Anyway Steve that bottom one. Whatever that is...looks very good on you and the overall look.

Hi Guy, I think you might be right on look, and I didn't spend much time with it there, as they had other customers waiting. It somehow looks a little better size wise - but it feels to me like a lot of bezel and not much watch - but it does look in the photos the best fit. Probably need to go back and drive them a bit more mad comparing only the SBDC061 to the SPB101J1 (which I think is also known as the SBDC083 - too many references!!) Thanks for your feedback.

When does a watch become "vintage"? That's probably another topic for a good discussion. This one is getting on to 30 years (bought new), and is still my favourite watch for swimming etc.

I agree the 061 and 101 looks better.
Looks like you have a similar wrist to mine.
I found the 775 too similar to the 6309 and the larger size looks odd on me. I did like the watch.
The 051 the lugs just stuck out, otherwise it's a beautiful watch.
The Sumo although it's a big watch, the lug curvature really helps make the watch fit better and was really comfortable. The big bezel text is not to everyone's taste.

I bought a 009 for a trip to Hawaii several years ago, enjoy is but it didn't become a edw, too many others, so it got placed into rotation. This year I got a 777 and it has been on my wrist everyday since I placed it on in June. I loved the feel of the original strap but it wasn't long before I swapped it for a nato/bond. Nearly months in and I can't say I'm ready to take it off. Like you said you will connect with a watch. I'm sure I'll start to rotate again, or there's no point in owning all the rest??? I'll agree that the 777and the 6309 are similar so if its what your going for and your worry is water resistance or reluming, sell the 6309 as is and buy the 77X and be happy. Oh and as far as the 77x being to large I thought the same when trying it on in the stores for year. Still I figure I'd wear it and see if it got smaller. I'd say in a day it was "perfect" unlike the LumTec I bought that says it's the same size...That always wears like a big watch.

Just about everyone will be able to help you with this question.. But nobody will really HELP you.. They are all good options in one way or another.. Yes it's a frustrating answer I know but take the time to watch some vids read some reviews and buy the one YOU like best.. Then enjoy the s##t out of it.. Have this beauty for couple of months now and it looks amazing. It's a Seiko military inspired snk805k2 watch for anybody that doesn't know. Highly recommended! Attachments:

(Clutches pearls in horror!). Whenever I mount my golden dialed 6139-6005 on a dive strap I am overcome with a desire to take it swimming. There is small angel on my shoulder that looks like Jonathan who is screaming in my ear not to. And so I don't. But I think about it...
Lol, the questionable wisdom of swimming with 6139s was one of the things ol' Swedefreak and I never really agreed on!
"Just buy a freakin' SKX, Aaron! Keep the 6139s dry!"
"The 6139 is a sports watch, Swede. They are designed to get wet!"
One thing to remember, in my defense, is that they were $100 watches at the time! I would still get a resealed 6139 wet today, but I might think twice given what they go for now. I got dozens of them wet over the years, and I only ever had one leak on me. Weird thing was I could never figure out why that watch leaked! I replaced the gaskets 2-3 times, as well as other parts, and I could never get it to seal up. Not to hijack the thread, but I still really miss that guy.

Hey Rod, that's a nice one. I just pulled the trigger on a new Seiko SBBN033 Tuna without the Prospex logo on dial. I haven't been able to wear my automatic watches since breaking my back and limited movement makes them stop overnight, so I think quartz is the go for me. When I am back to normal, hopefully in the next few months we must have another catch up. It's been a terrible few months, losing my mother in December, dealing with family as co-executor and serious injury. Hope you are doing well.
