I've been really fascinated with this aspect of watch collecting and, like many other folks I'm sure, I've bought some based solely on the appearance of the lume. My two favorites are these: I've always thought of this as classic patina, antiqued appearing, not quite tan but not quite brown either. I was intrigued by this light grey lume. I had never really seen one quite like this and it convinced me to get this particular 6105. The grey in the lume with the brushed SS of the case is striking so it gets a lot of wrist time. I think I check the time every 5 minutes with this one on! This one is also nice, my wife's 2205: I suppose this would be called "creamy" or something like that. Why does the lume age so differently? Exposure to UV or other light sources must be an influence. Time spent in a drawer maybe? Elements that creep into a poorly sealed case? I also have a SKX173 that I bought new about 15 years ago and the dial still looks new despite getting daily wear for many years in all kinds of conditions. What do you guys prefer and what are your lume theories?

Moisture is the first item that causes aging. Too much and it turns the lume nmaterial black and the held moisture then corrodes any metal it contacts.
UV would be another factor. This is more the likely culprit for those nicely greyed or tanned hands and markers.
Another factor is likely the composition of the lume materials themselves. Seiko has changed the make up of their lume a few times; the last being in the early 1990s when Lumibrite was invented. Prior to that the use of Prometium and other radio-active materials wee used.

I love aged lume, as long as it's a nice even patina...very attractive. While I don't think I have any in the creamy category, I do have a couple grey.

Actually, I guess my 6306 would qualify as creamy, yes?

The vintage Swiss watches have lume that almost seems to tone and decay as a matter of course.
Seikos are the opposite. They usually retain their snow-white lume (which often still glows) until something causes it to discolor. I know for a fact that moisture causes the lume on Seikos to turn grey (I have accidentally "greyed out" a few), but I am not sure why we see the other colors.
I love toned lume too, but it is something that we aren't treated to very often!

My favorite creamy / almost golden 6306-7000 birth month year story 1 owner before me watch. I made the mistake of wearing it out for 2 weeks straight a few years ago while down in MS working on my house (not while working though surprised-scream-smiley-emoticon) and the lume turned grey. I almost had a heart attack but it took 3 weeks for it to turn back creamy / golden. It now resides in the box and is only worn indoors. I think the main reason I love my Dynamic is they fully matured golden lume (it was originally white) Too bad the original hands didn't age equally and started to get black mold spots and had to be replaced with NOS ones.
