This thread will be a place to share and explore any and all spirits that are of the distilled nature.
I would love to hear other's thoughts on Bourbon, the types and tastes

The only spirits I drink are whisky and gin. Not too fussy with the gin, as i drink it as a G&T, but I'm a little more selective with the whisky.
At the moment my favourite is Cardhu 15 - a fairly gentle, sweeter style malt. With ice in the right glass.
I can't handle the Islay strong peaty, smokey, iodiney varieties. They seem like an exercise in self-harm. Undrinkable. What do they say about Laphroaig? Tastes like a burnt hospital. And Lagavulin is no better. To those who think they like the Islay medicines, try a Cardhu instead.
Cheers.

I drank a lot of scotch whisky about 25 years ago but lost my taste for it; mostly because I drank it neat and most in my price range were not much better than leaded gasoline!
Rye and Gin are two that I could never get over the taste. Again, probably due to the grade I could afford.
Back in my business travelling days, I got to sample several Bourbons while in Tennessee and Kentucky. Most were palatable but a couple were really enjoyable, neat. I don't remember the names now but I'm sure I haven't seen them in the local liquor stores.
One time when I was in Oklahoma, I was privileged to be given a sample of a top grade moonshine. It was definitely a Bourbon but it was so smooth. I could drink that particular one every day if it was available
Another drink I really enjoy is top grade Cognac.

Islay malts are an acquired taste for sure. Personally, I like them - Laphroig, Bruichladdich and Lagavulin particularly, with just a chunk of ice. And Talisker from Skye as well, another with a peaty, earthy flavour. One I can never get to enjoy is Glenfiddich - I always find it too harsh on the palate.
In my 11 years living in Scotland I only visited two distilleries - Deanston and Glenturret. I drank enough of the bloody stuff though!!
I’m trying desperately to keep off the spirits as I just drink too much of them once I open a bottle. Very unusual to see one last into a third day...

Yeah. I prefer the Isley malts as well, although the speyside offerings are good with one I’ve cube in summer. Strangely enough my current open bottles are Russell Reserve Single Barrell at 55%abv and also there 10 year old at 45%abv. There’s also a bottle of Monkey Sholder for a drink with ice on a hot day. Monkey Shoulder is a blend of 3 single malts so it stands apart for almost all other blends. Scotch whisky blends usually contain a distillate from non barley grains. Cheers Phil

Cheers Phil I've probably never had a 'real' scotch. Genfiddich is possibly the best I've had. Wish I was born rich so I could have sampled the best
If/when I get over to Oz, you and I will have to explore many things, some watch related and some, not so much

Pete. You have been keen on coming here for years. Do it before it’s too late. As far as whisky goes, we have a local whisky club that meets once a month, everyone pays a set amount and we get to sample stuff you probably can’t afford or get a chance to taste one that you might buy. All good fun. Some educational stuff as well. Cheers Phil
