On another forum we have this topic running. The member who guesses the answer posts something to guess or can pass to someone else who has a mysterious object. Posters should monitor the topic regularly so that we don't get bored and or add hints if and when necessary or required.

I see where you are coming from and it looks like a stylus but no Not audio related purely mechanical.

I was going to guess it's a stylus for a tool that measures surface roughness, but those aren't supposed to mark the surface they're measuring.

When fitted to its mother machine, the diamond is pressed into the surface of a material and a measurement taken across the points of the diamond imprint. The greater the measurement the softer the material. A ref chart provides hardness of specific materials.
