Today I noticed condensation on the inside of the crystal of my '65 Sea horse. The weather is warm and kind of moist. It's a little hard to see because of the silver dial, unless you look for it. For this reason I don't know if this is a recent development, or if this has been happening all along. The crystal has visibly had scratches polished out of it in the past. My question is: could this be caused by porous acryllic, or more likely a bad gasket? The dial and hands are excellent and show no sign of any water intrusion. When the watch is put in a dry coolish room or box, the circular spot of condensation disappears without a trace.

Acrylic crystals are prone to cracking, quite often where you cant see it, but it could be leaking gaskets or mating surfaces. Ultimately, if you don't want the watch to degrade rapidly, get it repaired by someone who can renew all the gaskets, and check the overall condition of the watch.

It’s likely the gaskets need replacing. I had a similar issue with a 6309-8480 a couple of years ago - replaced the gaskets and it# been fine ever since.

Thanks for the insight. I don't know about finding a gasket to fit a '65 watch, though...

Thanks for the insight. I don't know about finding a gasket to fit a '65 watch, though... The right watchmaker will deal with the gasket issues.

Thanks for the insight. I don't know about finding a gasket to fit a '65 watch, though... Which one of your Seahorse’s is it out of interest? Edit: if it’s your 66-8980 then it’s an 0B2910B - Cousins sell generic gaskets, 0.75 x 29.10 x 30.60, and they fit (I’ve used them on my J13052).

Yep, it's the 66-8980. Thanks for the tip! Which gaskets would I need, besides for the crystal?

I have been keeping all of mine, that I see fogging, in a bag with the stem pulled out, with those little desiccant packs and bottles that come with meds and other things, until the next time I wear it so the moisture doesn't do and "damage" until the gaskets are replaced...

No crystal gasket (it’s a waterproof crystal 308W03AN) and the crown obviously comes fitted with a gasket.

Both are available, and neither lists the 66-8980 as a compatible model. I checked an old Seiko casing document, and it also says 0B2910B (without number) for the 66-8980.

Personally I’d just buy a generic one - much cheaper, does the job and brand new rubber.

They don't have the gasket at Cousins, but Ebay has NOS gaskets. I guess 01 or 04 probably makes no difference.
