Well, after winning Cam's generous prize from this thread, I am taking the hint and paying it forward with a prize somewhat related to my win there. Cam's request was for entrants to state their favorite thread from wristsushi history, and I picked this one, in which Anthony gave us a detailed, step-by-step analysis of why the 62mas clearly did not come with the waffle straps we'd been putting them on, and instead came on swiss-made Tropic straps purchased by Seiko with a Seiko-added clasp. Well, not long after Anthony figured that out, I started looking out for the rare correct Seiko strap for my 62mas - still no luck there. However, I did find a way (known to many on these threads, but new to me) to track down inexpensive used tropics, and discovered that many of the ones I could get had a similar 3-to-2-hole pattern as the original Seiko one, with the same small keepers too. Now, these can't be mistaken for a correct Seiko one - for one thing, the clasp is a traditional "Acier" one, and the holes are spaced more tightly. Also, oddly, most of these have three keepers on them rather than 2. But nevertheless, they make an excellent substitute that looks the part, and like all vintage Tropic straps these are rock solid straps 50+ years on. I now have more of these straps than I'd care to admit, and I think the right thing would be to pass one along. I can't attest to its precise value nowadays, especially since the tropics have been resurrected by a company claiming to be producing "original" ones. And Larry (UncleSeiko) makes good repros too. But from what I've seen, these still bring a pretty petty on eBay. Anyway, enough text, pics follow. I will leave this post to accumulate entrants until a week from today, Monday, June 29th. And since Cam came up with a fun request to go with his, I'll suggest this: share a watch that you own and love that if you showed it to yourself before you started collecting, you would've thought it was hideous. I'm sure most of us have several... Cheers,

OK this is a really tempting prize Brian ! I have a similar if not exact one on my 6217-8001 and it really really looks the part. So I would suggest the competition be fierce for this extremely generous gesture.
On to the comp: "share a watch that you own and love that if you showed it to yourself before you started collecting, you would've thought it was hideous."
Well, if this "True Pogue" I built from spare parts I had literally laying around in my spares drawer doesn't qualify, I don't know what would ! The idea was to replicate Bill Pogue's actual watch at the time of its famous auction, aka the last known appearance in public. (Unless Bertrand is keeping it to himself ) Ratty tatty tachy ring that only its mother could love, the wrong subdial hand (but a perfect match!), whitewashed by age inner ring, not to mention the dings and dents and beat up old end links. And with the hopes that no one excommunicates me for saying this, before I became a Seikoholic and Pogue Afficianado (make that Pogue Nut) I would have found the dial to be a bit, um, 'too much'.
The submission:

Great gesture bbilford83! Please don't count me in the contest as I don't have any watches with 19mm lug width but I'll play the hideous but love'em-to-death game. Gotta be this one for me. Fangs as hour markers, 3-into-1 rocket ship as hands, and ORANGE!!! WHO BUYS THESE??!!?

I didn't rate Tunas to begin with.. Even after I got into watches... This is probably my greatest "how wrong was I" watch in my collection.. Henry

That’s a great idea! A few to choose from but I’ll go with this ugly beautiful beast. Never appealed to me at first but then King Louis would post them a few times (I think he has about four hundred and nine of them) and over the months I started to appreciate their chunky charms.

Great comp bbilford83 Analog digital pocket watch. With touch screen an multifunction inc barometer. Literally something swatch would make for irony purpose. But it grabbed me. I wouldn’t be without it now. I’ll opt out from the comp- great thread though.

Still only 4 entrants! I've got no objection to really good odds, but I can't imagine more members couldn't use a 19mm tropic, no? To be clear, you don't have to offer up a watch you would've found ugly before collecting .

camrok is right. When my future wife bought me a watch in 2007, I chose a very slim and non-descript Tissot quartz watch. I would never have chosen an Arnie if one had been available at the time. Research for that watch later lead me down the rabbit hole. Cam later sent me his black Arnie to try on and I just didn't get it. I figured an Arnie wasn't the watch for me. Then Henry kindly sold me a project orange one that he had bought in a job lot and finally I got it. It's one of my favourites now.

Nice idea and I dig the prize! I’m in! For me the watches I never thought I would own/love have to be the monsters and the tunas. If I had to pick a winner it has to be the tuna

This requires no introduction nor explanation. The wall paper from my grandparent’s front hallway in their apartment frozen in time was miniaturized and put in an equally dated napkin ring holder type thing.

Whoa. I feel slightly embarrassed to have my name drawn out in two competitions, but grateful to be part of it all as well. And I do have a watch that is deserving of this strap.
Thanks very much Brian for running the competition.
Regards to all, Ross
