Quite agree Don. I find it odd that, for example, there are many members of both WS and SCWF (including some of our forum moderators) who frequently post on SCWF but not here on WS - just look at almost any ‘WRUW’ thread across both sites.

Yes, I'm a member on WUS, where I also contribute, but I find they mostly discuss (nay argue about) is quality and accuracy.
Then there's the ever frequent 'my grandad left me this, what's it worth' post. So much for sentiment.

I do often wonder why we have fewer posts and less arguments than other forums, I'd like to think that this forum is made up of those that like to ponder a watch and it's merits with an appreciation of all designs and styles. I seldom make comment on another's watch unless it really ticks all the boxes, that's not saying I don't admire many, maybe I've become retrospective and miss the classics. Also I do find that the subtleties of communication are completely lost on forums and I'm tired of trying to convey a humorous idea or technical insight without the need for an explanation. This post also needs a watch photo. A watch I absolutely adore and will most likely never be sold. 1964 Alpinist, notice the five different fonts, totally frivolous! Who does that anymore.

I think we have tried to make WS a place where people can voice their opinions freely, perhaps there are some who prefer the drama that is brought on elsewhere? I have not been to any other forum is quite some time, never felt the need.
I find it somewhat funny how up in arms folks were back when VS started buying up forums, and making them an ad cluttered mess. Yet here we are, still trudging along solo, hoping to have a spot where folks want to hang out. I am more than willing to listen to suggestions as to how we can make WS better, but never seem to get any real feedback.
I can say that I am thankful for those of you who do contribute quality content here, and hopefully you will continue to do so.

FWIW - I'm new around here, no idea if this feedback is helpful or not, but my "hot take"... I think it might all start with "Sharing photos"... To me that's what makes the other boards so much easier - and likely lands them more posts and members. I am a techy and it took me a while to figure it out, and is still a juggle. On the other boards I can literally copy/paste whatever I am looking at on whatever device I am on. To me sharing photos is what its all about - then the commentary to decorate them. I know it sounds silly to say one feature is the big difference, but that's my take. I'm new to the Seiko enthusiast community and don't know anything about its history - except that apparently it broke into two groups at some point. I used to host and admin other enthusiast forums - using mainly vbulletin, but have been out of that game for many years now. I remember it being more of a hassle than most realized. Groundhog66 thank you for keeping this corner of the internet working.

You can attach photos, or you can upload from another hosted site, I’m not sure the copy and paste is an option on this particular software. That said, I will certainly find out if I can make it easier.

I think this forum has a working threshold to start contributing. It takes a bunch of posts to actually be able to get into the game properly and I think that is one reason why we don't see the usual "what this is worth" posts. It also means that you really have to be into these watches if you keep chugging on. I know it might feel like a small community, but I can tell you that this has been the single most important source of knowledge for me on my trip and everyone who is an active and contributing member here pretty much knows what they are talking about. Maybe not always from a direct experience with the example in question, but the wealth of knowledge about anything else related to Japanese watcheds pretty much guarantees that the input is 90 to 95% accurate on the topic, and when it is not, we still learn about the goofy exceptions that break the rules in the world of Vintage Japanese. I often find on other forums that people comment on things and share their experience when in reality they have no experience on the topic at all. For this reason I recommend this forum to anyone who is somewhat into Japanese watches. I leave it up to them whether they want to join or not. Also in other forums (especially smaller forums in a single language area where majority of people don't understand English to the extent that they could really tap into English sources) usually have too much anecdotal misinformation and opinions/views related to feelings, that I get tired very quickly about the misinformation. For example here I feel that people understand why some of us are more into quartz watches and other into mechanical and respect each other. Discussion is not simply based on "Quartz watches are cheap crap", "Get yourself a real watch", "Mechanical watches can be serviced for ever", "Mechanical watches are real watches", "Mechanical watches have a soul" etc. crap of which most are not true in the real world. Here I feel no such problem and feel that even in situations where people are wrong (myself included), they feel safe to admit it AND most of all people respectfully correct the misinformation (most likely because it's not too far from the truth). At least to me it's the quality, not the quantity. But still what DonJ said, it would be nice to see more photos from people who have been collecting for a long time. P.S. I have tried to keep posting some WRUW shots, but recently I have been stuck with the same watch as the baby no. 2 keeps me busy. I would like start posting some service stuff as I have noticed that there are not that much material on some of the movements/modules I'm working with online. Only thing preventing me so for has been my work station which is an absolute mess and I think if people would see it they'd think "how he ever manages to produce anything working out of that junkyard"

Well I know I'm guilty. I don't seem have anywhere near as much time as I did a few years back, and I didn't think I had much time then! (I thought we were supposed to get less busy as we got older, not more?). So I pop in and catch up with what has been happening without posting all that much these days. I don't massively do WRUW anymore, I figure I don't have anything that special and everyone has seen what I have about twenty times over. As far as forums go WS is still where it's at for me though, I don't go on the other forum half as much and there's another forum I used to be on every day (I think you are on that one too Fergus) that I haven't even lurked on for months on end. Anyway, I'll try and get together a tinkering thread soon. I'm currently servicing a Valjoux 7733 so although it's not sushi it's an interesting vintage chrono so I'll see what I can do.

As a relatively new member of this forum, I mostly post pictures of what I'm wearing. Given the brainpower of the long-term users of this forum it feels just a tad presumptuous to think I might have a contribution to make that hasn't been made in the past. In fact, the way I discovered this forum, and the way that I continue to use it, is as a research archive. Using the search function seems to answer a good proportion of my questions before I even need to post any.
OTOH, I'm slowly getting my hands "dirty" opening up more and more watches and tinkering. That'll increase my knowledge and hopefully allow me to contribute more - or at the very least give me more questions to post to tap into the brainpower of the forum as I break things!
Anyway, that's my two cents!
Edit: Oh yeah, why spend time here and not some of the other forums? It's pleasant here. I get tired of dick-measuring and arguing, and the inevitable critique of choices in what one might choose to collect, elsewhere.

Guilty as charged ! Until I post a photo easily here, I will only post pix that help teach or explain or such. That’s my issue. So I don’t do the WRUW or such very often. My photos like everyone’s are over 1MB. When I want to post 2 photos in one post I get denied. When .I do post they are tiny so I go back and run manipulations to make it big. PITA ! I can’t bother with the Imgur/Flickr/etc for 90% of the stuff so WRUW here on WS just doesn’t cut it. BTW Nick - are you a TOF Lurker ?

And here is why for those that are wondering... Well it seems a Renis has an extra 15 associated jewels, that’s an easy tell if the R is partially obscured.

Remember too, a HUGE number of online users in those statistics pages are bots. Skews the picture a lot.
As of exactly now we have 5 members online and 34 “guests”

To be honest I don’t really like the vibe over there, far too much bitching and bickering from what I can see. I find WS a much ‘calmer’ place to be. And, yes, you definitely are guilty as charged!!

Submitted an inquiry over on the support board, and this is the response I received.
groundhog66, unfortunately at this time the attachment system or using external links are the only options for embedding images in posts. Sorry.
I would love to get on a better platform so we can have access to more bells & whistles, but with the decrease in donations each year, this is not going to be a possibility.
