The Welsh language is just plain weird - ‘w’ and ‘y’ are vowels, so you see words which, in English, appear to have no vowels when actually they do. I used to travel to Cardiff quite a lot for work, and I found it odd that every single sign is in both English and Welsh, yet very few people in South Wales actually speak Welsh! It’s getting the same in Scotland now as well, with Gaelic. I lived in Central Scotland for 11 years, and no-one spoke the language, yet every day the news was presented in Gaelic. I’d watch it and not understand a bloody word, until they mentioned a word that didn’t directly translate - like ‘helicopter’
