Orients are very good watches but I feel they are not too aggresive in the marketplace. They are a part of Seiko and that might be a reason. I also think tehy are not well defined as to the segments they want to pursue. Your opinions please.

Orient is very popular in western asia and south america, Russia and Brazil in particular. But I agree, of the Japanese brands, they seem to be the red headed step child. Have you seen the Orient Star Standard Date with "Super Anti-Reflective Coating"? This is the one you want. orientwatchusa.com/collections/mens-watches/orient-star/dv02003w

The watch is beautiful seems like a Japanese datejust but why the 50m wr? That seems cheap to me when they can spend very little in a gasket and save by making it a solid back.

Probably because it is primarily intended as a dress watch. Besides there is more to WR than just the gaskets. The case, gaskets, crystal and case back all have to be designed to withstand certain pressures so making this a 100m or 200m watch could significantly increase the cost of manufacturing.

I've always enjoyed Orient watches. I've been seeing more and more come in from customers over the past 2 years.
