I'm a bit late to the party, but this is really great!!!
There's a similar - though more obsessive - treatment of minute variations in Lions, and Dolphins at the old Seikomatic Archive.
For a whole other category of early caseback inscriptions: The early Seiko Gyro Marvel (1957) had the inscription around the edge in black. This was fragile, so it's very rare to see it well preserved (here's mine): The first Seikomatics (1961) had the same idea. My example isn't preserved, but here's an NOS beauty off the Bay: For a couple more minor variations from the 60's, how about the "plain Seiko" Chronometers?
Seikomatic Chronometer - Lion medalion (non GS). 6246 9000
Seiko Hi Beat Chronometer - gold medalion (non KS). 5626 7091
And the strangely plain, square Seikomatic R, 8305-5000 (not even Seiko marked on that one!)
I'm sure there's still others to find!

higglepix - thanks for the links! Excellent detailed breakdown of the dolphins and the GS medallions. Time permitting, I will try and chase down more images and update the first post with all of these new / great examples

Great post. Hows about:
Goldfeather (feather) Scubamaster (Stingray) SUS (S) Flightmaster (Turbine) Credor (Ship) Electronic range (E symbol) Seiko 5 Superior (Lion)
Presmatic Yacht-Timer Ultra Thin Dress (UTD) KS Superior Chronometer J14009 Automatic Indicator (bare as a baby's bottom other than the ref)
*The gold lion one you've shown for the GS was also used on non-GS like the KS 4420 and Seikomatic 6245 Most of the above should be on tinterweb, but let me know if you need photos of any

I think this can squeak in for 1979? Very late for the horse shoe and only one of two for the 7009 movements. My other example/reference 7009-8120 is from '81 and too late for this study.
