Been looking for a Pilot's watch as a gift for a first time watch wearer kid. This is a "field" watch, but I think they both fit the bill. I like that the JDM version has Kanji as an option for the day. I initially thought the Seiko Flightmaster SNA411 would be the one to get, but it's now a bit too pricey on the grey market. I guess a Hamilton field watch or maybe even a Laco or other German (if I really want a Pilot's/Flieger watch) could work too. For about $250-$300, it's a much nicer watch than I ever had as a "starter" watch. Thoughts, alternatives? twobrokewatchsnobs.com/seiko-5-sports-midfield-collection/

Unfortunately the prices of entry level Seiko's has gone up 3X over the last couple of years.
That affects us watch people who actually wear them and in your case the idea of giving one as a gift.
If you are infinitely wealthy then no problem buy a $300 watch and if the recipient never wears it no big deal.
However if that is not the case and you want to spend a good amount of money on a "Good" watch in hopes that they wear it then you may be out the money then you might be upset to hear that they never wear it.
You didn't mention if the recipient wears a watch now or not or wear the gifted watch as much as you would like them to embrace the gift and wear it.
If they don't own a watch and you like the design you had shown maybe a Timex Scout 40 would be a better option to feel out the situation.
HOWEVER if they like the watch and they show it off and their friends tell them "Timex is a CHEAP ASS watch" they may fall victim to peer pressure and not wear it and be turned off from future watches.
Maybe feel out the situation first and ask some questions before choosing which watch to give.

I like the look a lot - has a Khaki vintage vibe to me. If you could find a used Hamilton in that style and price range, that would be my "field watch" pick, but that Seiko is also great. And I agree with Tyrone Jenkins that Timex is killing it right now in the design department - though they do carry a stigma of being a cheap watch brand, at least in some circles. But then so does Seiko.

Good luck and hope the youngster likes the idea of wearing a watch.

These are basically the closest thing you can get to an SNK these days, but for 3x the price I would be a bit more worried about it breaking than with a $80-$100 SNK.
One watch that I used to have which would have been a great choice was the weird Amazon exclusive SNKM95 which had a bright red dial!
My first thought would be a midsize diver because those tend to be a little more durable so they could wear it more often. The 36mm Marathon divers used to be pretty inexpensive but I just checked their website and they're like $1300 now, yeesh. And SKX013s are like $400 if you can even find one...

Watch dives have a 36mm quartz in 36mm that might fit the bill for about $90. For an auto they have the 6105 Homage on a strap for $95! but its 43mm! Check out their site they have mostly Seiko movements, Some Citizen and a few Chinese IIRC.

Good looking watch. I hope Seiko didn't make it 48mm x 52mm. That said, I am not sure I'd start a kid out with an automatic. Seems like it would be a bit fiddly for him?
If I were in your shoes I'd look into one of the midsize 6458 or 7C43 divers from the '80s.

That said, I am not sure I'd start a kid out with an automatic. Seems like it would be a bit fiddly for him? Damn, that's a good point. Besides being more fickle and prone to breaking, kids nowadays don't even know HOW to read the time (are school clocks going digital)? I gifted a Seiko5 Naruto version to a nephew...and he loves the thing but can't read the time -____- The first watch I got myself was a digital watch and I wore the hell out of it underwater. All the buttons, features (alarm, stop watch, screen light) were what made me love it. It wasn't until my 2nd watch that I had an actual clock face to read. Ok I think I'll switch to some sort of Casio for the first watch, then I can follow-up that up in later years with an clock face. This Citizen Chandler ref BM8180-03E (lots of "Garrison" naming though on the website) at $250 on sale for $200 now fits the bill too. I like that it has the 0 to 60 second markers instead of the 0-24 GMT markers on the Seiko.

My first watch was a Timex with a fish on the dial, and the entire dial was indiglo. (Not my photo, I broke the bezel on mine and also I'm not sure where it is anymore):
My second watch was a digital Timex with an elastic wrist band and I loved using all of the functions like you said! (Also not my photo)
Man, kids watches were really cool back then, now they look way weirder.
Have you considered a square Baby-G by the way?
