So, the 7018-8000 arrived yesterday, and boy what a treat. Essentially non-running, I worked on it last night, and starting again at 3 a.m. this morning. Yikes. It wasn't in mint, perfect, sock drawer condition. Someone had used it hard and fast, and then put it away wet. Literally. Typically for me I didn't take out of the box shots, stupidly. Whoever owned this watch took into water. Salt water. Thankfully it was new enough in its life that the seals held. Dial & hands are basically perfect, barring a tiny shadow spot by the :05 marker. Lume is excellent. But with the case, there was still surface grunk under all the sealing surfaces, filling the buttons, all over the caseback threads. It took hours of poking and careful cleaning to get everything apart and pristine again. Internally it was beautiful but needed a full service. Thankfully none of the water had gotten inside. Watch needed zero parts replaced - everything was a clean & lubrication job. Case brushing is excellent by the way. Definitely on the smaller side, watch-wise. Identical size to a comparable era 700x dress watch. One of the things I'm proudest of though is that I found that I had all the seals for this model. Every one. This watch is actually sealed! Anyway, what fun. Here's the auction photo: and here are the "after" shots.

That really cleaned up nice, congrats! I wish you could have seen it before. It looked great at first glance despite the heavily worn crystal, but then you could see that all the crevices were stuffed with brown/black material. The underside of the bezel ring was as well. Anywhere that water could have gotten in and stuck around for awhile, it did. It's a miracle that the seals held, but they did. One advantage to the Suwa / 6139 etc caseback design is that the seals are outside of the threads, not inside like here. Not as good a design at all. The button seal layout is actually pretty nice, I prefer it. From the inside out it goes seal, floating washer, spring. The seal is static and seals on the mobile button shaft.

Looks great, love the kanji day...pretty much any watch with kanji gets an extra 7 points out of the gate. Congrats.

An EXCELLENT restoreation chinathumbsup.gif Does it count as a restoration if all I did was a super deep clean, new seals, new crystal, and a full rebuild? I didn't relume anything...

You restored it to it's pre DNA condition...that's a restoration in my books thunbsup.gif pre-DNA, pre-swimming. Oh, and pre-COSERV trip too. It had a COSERV stamp in the back and sadly this vanished in the ultrasonic. Again, I wish I'd taken pictures. Gone now. Oh, it seems that the reason that the original owner stopped wearing it was that the winding weight had backed off of its post. No winding = no wearing.

That's a really nice watch. Kinda like a cyclops panda. Yeah, in a crazy way. I think the most unique feature is the white minute-counter hand.

That's a fantastic watch, I love it when a gamble pay off big time! thanks, it did pay off, more or less. It would have been a real slam-dunk if the watch didn't need a serious deep clean, like hard-core, inside and out. Many hours of work and some good luck too. But it's worth it - the movement is beautiful, like new, and the watch is a real survivor, and a timekeeper now.

The color of the sweep second hand looks to be mixed. Sometimes it is almost as if it starts out dark at the center of the dial and becomes lighter until it gets to a red/orange tip. Does it look like that for real or is it a lighting/photograph issue. The whole look of the watch is really cool.
