Growing up I have always been a guy to take things apart and try and get them back together. I was the only one it seemed in the family with any mechanical aptitude, Not my grandfather, father, brothers, even my son, none have any thing close to a talent that would required being handy.
I never took what they did for a living for granted, figuring just about everything needs some kind of skill. I of course always found something to do with my hands...
I'm not kidding when i say I doubt my father has ever been successful repairing anything. From Plumbing and carpentry, appliance repair or mechanical things. I don't know if any the others think what it is we do is easy or what. It doesn't stop them from trying. My brother decided since he watched a youtube he could save a few bucks and replace the brakes in his Cayenne. He drove his daughter to dance practice and had to call for a tow because it had no brakes when she was done...This was his second attempt. The first one he called me over because 'd watch a video and the guy did one wheel start to finish under 10 minutes. I said you need to hit the pin harder. He said he was afraid to because the guy in the video just kind of tapped it out...It was literally like the expression I heard decades ago. "Your not paying me all that money to just hit something with a hammer, but where to hit it" (and how hard)
My father said "not sure what's wrong with it but I broke the pull cord while trying to start it this year". There screws missing, things were pried apart etc. I stripped it down in short order fashioned a new pull cord and before I even give it a yank I take a look at the plug. Mind you I don't think I have ever "needed" to change a plug on a single cylinder 4-stroke. Even here I was able to clean it to the point that with a touch of ether she popped right over and would run with a periodic squirt. Started to get late and needed to get ready for dinner, so pushed it to the side until next weekend.
I guess I'm frustrated that I don't think me and my abilities are taken serious. I'm not lookin for attaboy or good job I get a great feeling and sense of accomplishment on my own, but I wonder what some people are thinking when they decide to take a tool to something?
