Another 7625 across the workbench and again there are problems. Another broken setting lever spring (replaced) and another shagged-up balance (unsalvageable). So, now I have two 7625 movements sans balance assembly. What is it with me and this calibre? OEM balance complete are nigh on impossible to find, and the Renata substitutes are a complete waste of time and money. I guess if I want to wear my others I’ll have to get used to swapping out the balance. The dial on this one is too good to leave it as a parts watch, and the case cleaned up very well indeed. It’s probably a transition piece as the rotor is signed ‘Sportsmatic 820’. The replacement SK crystal is much taller than the OEM one but works well I think. My cheap and cheerful (nasty?) Indian crystal lift managed to mark the outer edges but it’s barely noticeable. In the end I took the balance assembly from my ‘international rescue’ Sportsmatic as this one runs much better - and it also handles the date-change without losing about 2 hours in the process. 7625-1990, March ‘65.

It looks a nice watch Nick.
Balances for many Seiko movements are in short supply if not totally unavailable. The future does not look good for amateur tinkering.
That's why a year or so back I took the opportunity to buy a number of little used Benrus movements which use 61## parts.
Have you tried Stefan...he's not the cheapest but does hold some unusual parts.

Fergus, Stefan only has the Renata balance in stock. Once bitten (well, 4 times now actually…) and all that. I’ve found another -1990 for the cost of a balance complete, so I’ll just need to hope this one is ok. If not, at least I’ll be adding to my spares stash!

Modded SKX013 today. Would love to find a set of original 013 hands. Thinking of swapping in a 6r15 too.

My other mod (I only have two). This 7546 came originally in a case with 10mm lugs. I swapped it into another 7546 case with 20mm lugs and popped in a new crystal. I tried to capture the dial. It's stunning!
