What the heck!? That's a huge splash of solder! Where on earth did that come from? Something above it have a melt-down?

Woha! I have never seen anything like that... I'm surprised it even works. I'd leave it alone if everything is running fine SSD is definitely the way to go. Your laptop will be like new! Also if the laptop is older than, lets say 6-7 years, you could also change the thermal paste on the CPU (looks like one can easily remove the heatsink). I would recommend Artic MX-4 (or similar from their line up) as it's not electrically conductive and it has proven itself.

I did tickle one edge and it appears loose but did no more than leave it alone because the comp works fine. trilo . I have been mulling replacing the existing 500GB (currently 2/3 used) with a new 1TB drive. I had set my mind on either a WD Blue or Black conventional rotating disc (5400/7200) drive but looking at it I have ordered a 1TB SSD. I'll leave the CPU for the moment thanks.

@fergus, I would urge you to peel it up and throw it away. It's not likely connected to anything but will conduct if it is. I make splatters like this all the time in my dealing with de-soldering large thermally connected components so I know they typically just peel up with no ill effects.

Wouldn't it risk the memory chip next to it or one of those capacitors? Or is that it hasn't attached on any of those as the blob has cooled during the time it dropped?

That's just it trilo, it's nearly impossible for it to attach as the parts it fell on are cold when it happened. I expect it peels up just fine.

When I fit the new SSD I will reassess the splash.

NIGHTMARE....4 hours wasted.
Initially my OS would not see the SSD so that took a while to sort that issue.
Managed to clone C to it which took about 2 hours which was fine.
The newly installed SSD fired windows up OK. After finding a few hardware issues and restarts it eventually settled down BUT the BIG issue was NO SOUND. It just would not see the REALTEK card. Tried various software updates/uninstalls etc but alas it failed. Popped the old drive back in and BING BONG sound. The SSD is currently running a wipe prog and will be returning to WD in the morning.

That's awful Fergus , so sorry to hear that it's been such a PITA. Since you are going to wipe the SSD anyway, you might try a clean install of windows onto it to see if it picks up the sounds drivers correctly (you know, because everyone wants to throw hours and hours at a PC for inexplicable and exasperating reasons.)
And the removal of the solder splash went how?

I hear what you suggest Simon but after a talk with WD support they state their current drives are only tested using Windows 10+. They cannot guarantee their compatibility with previous versions, especially Win 7 now it's unsupported. I was a little surprised by this but having looked back though their web pages they do quietly specify it.
Sorry but I did not get time for the SS.

I thought they stopped supporting that years ago? Funny I ran 95 up until I switched to XP, avoided everything in between! Got XP since tried to overwrite 98se and add a slave drive and it all came crashing down, when that died...I had 7 until a house fire in '18 when I got new equipment w/10 installed...I hate IT...
