got this email today... Which makes me think of the old Discount Tire ad - replace them with Seiko, and the tire with this new Solar "Pogue":

That's such an iconic commercial dapellegrini, I reference it every once and awhile and only senior staff have a clue what I mean by it I too would chuck that abomination through the Seiko store front window, that's not even trying to be a legitimate 6139 tribute...

Other than getting the dial and insert color right, everything else is crap

I bought my first SpringDrive from Arizona Fine Time and Joe Kirk was the sales associate. Now years later he basically is #1 man in sales & marketing in the US for Grand Seiko. My post has absolutely nothing to do with your OP post. I just thought I'd share.

What a PoS.
Either reissue it or don’t.
These two tone for no reason bezels really piss me off.

I've also bought from AZ Fine Time... not a knock on them - they are great, and I am not sure if this marketing is from them or from Seiko... but it falls flat.

I will go against the grain here. I think it’s cool. It’s not intended for vintage watch collectors like us. The old 6139s look very cool already to me for various reasons, one of them being the color scheme.
Did you know that Seiko already issued a quartz chronograph with this color scheme back in the 1980’s? The 7A28-7030 and 703A, yellow and navy respectively, both had Pepsi bezels and were clearly an homage to the 6139-600x models that had ended production nearly a decade before. Those 7As are uncommon and fetch a fair amount of money in good condition. I think those watches are knockouts. I own a navy one (needing restoration) and I’d love to have a yellow dialed one.
But this new model does not make my heart beat faster. But if I didn’t already own too many damn watches, I might think about buying one of these. I already have the same watch in a black and white “Panda” color scheme and it’s a nice watch. But I’m into vintage watches mainly so I’d rather have the real deal.
Vintage watches are not for everyone. Younger folks want a new watch. Those of us that don’t mind tinkering are not scared off by vintage watches because we know we can get them repaired and get a feeling of accomplishment doing it. But we are not in the majority of watch lovers or those who wear a watch on their wrist like it’s just another piece of jewelry. I think Seiko is going after the casual watch wearer, not the WIS.
If they made a mechanical automatic watch that was true to the 6139-600x, what would you pay for it? They already sell a mechanical chronograph and it runs about $2,300. So I would expect a decent Pogue re-issue to go for more than this. Would you pay $2,500 or more for one? $3,500? $4,500?
The 6139-600x is such an important reference for Seiko that I don’t understand why they don’t make a bigger deal about it. They should be selling its equivalent watch today, in mechanical form, and honestly, I think they should charge a lot for it. It was an amazing achievement by Seiko back in the day and they should capitalize on that legacy with more than a color scheme.

Can't say I am surprised...they already did the blue one. It is definitely a patronizing move for collectors, but it looks fine. I just expect that Seiko will make it some ridiculous limited edition of 6,139 examples and charge $1500 for it.

There's bugger all about it that's anything like a 6139 other than a few colours.

Where should we put a date window? Let's shoehorn it in a really stupid spot, so it makes no sense at all. I'd sacrifice one of the sub dials to have a better date window

I'd sacrifice one of the sub dials to have a better date window Rob It’s what I hate the most on my SBDL085. The date numeral is so far below the dial, you can’t see it unless looking straight down on it.

I may have said it before, but I think Seiko has an opportunity to re-use the Omega Speedmaster playbook. Special editions, sure, make a lot of them. Very expensive versions? Sure do that too. But if they made a "standard re-issue" 6139 and perhaps 6138, like the "standard" Omega Speedmaster, it seems to me that it would be a "must have" modern Seiko. If they could get it around 50-70% the price of a Speedmaster, again I think that is the sweet spot, so $3k-5k. This would need to get us a high accuracy Speedmaster competitor, not just vintage lipstick on a crap movement, and no Prospex branding please.
IMO this would help them move up market and reinforce their brand value / heritage. Many here would say that is too expensive, but I wouldn't worry about that. If the hardcore fans like your watches, just can't afford them - that is a good problem to have, especially for Seiko, where they have a seemingly limitless well of other cheaper options and vintage pieces to satisfy collectors.

But back then the two tone bezel served a purpose of deliniation for the first 13.5 seconds. These two tones only serve the purpose of filling the yuppies’ need for two colors.

It's a QUARTZ (possibly Solar) movement! And how is the 24 hour sub dial relevant to a 6139" It's the same movement as in this watch! Shameful!

Seiko is missing a huge opportunity.

I really dislike that sub dial it's purple??? The big thing I dislike about newer Seikos are that they just don't wear as well as the vintage models. Just too fat and odd. Why do they insist on putting see through case backs that increase the thickness on every watch.

read about this on one of the watch blogs, and the writer said Seiko fans were going to hate it. They didn't miss the mark. The hate is Seiko calling it Pogue. They missed the anniversary by a year ad then they produce this? I don't mind it but to me it isn't anything special and I'd save my money for something else...Can anyone tell me what the two F's are for or is it F and E and the photo distorts?
