Was doing my usual perusing of the infamous bay and it's shallow waters when what did I come across but this... Anyone know what it is and why I should be excited?

I have no idea, but I like it. Well, let me tell you...this cost me $12 shipped and it is far more important than a sub $10 Seiko of almost any kind! This is the very hard to find Sea-Gull ST7 hand wind watch. The ST7 was an almost production watch that was killed by the quartz revolution. It's predecessor, the ST5 is a well respected calibre that Chinese mechanical watch enthusiasts scramble to collect. I don't remember the numbers but I think there were only about 1200 of these watches ever produced and the majority were automatic 29 jewel models. The 21 jewel manual wind is a rarity. Since Seiko never produced anything in such small quantities, it's hard to make any comparisons. As far as performance goes, the ST5 was as good as any of the middle of the road offerings the Swiss or Japanese were producing in the 70s. The ST7 was going to be the next step up in terms of accuracy and prominence for the Se-Gull calibres. Unfortunately, quartz movements came along and all mechanical watch producers had to switch or try and compete with dirt cheap mechanical movements. I'm lucky to have spotted this watch on auction from a seller who did not know what he was selling. Given, it does not appear to be running but that is not a problem for me ;-)

I love it for a number of reasons, one that tadpole style micro adjuster and that they were proud enough to display "Made in China". It would most likely still be being used, if the sweep hand hadn't come adrift!
