I inherted my parents stereo cabinet. I knew my dad went to night school to learn how to built it and I saw i daily as a young boy(1958 and forward). It was always a part of my parents home; no matter where they went. It followed then to Singapore and even to Uyo, Nigeria, and a couple of other places after they retired. Today; nearly 9 years after they were both gone; I finally realized how much they loved one another. My mother gave up her musical career as a classical pianist when I was born and my dad never forgot her sacrifice. In 1958, they had a choice between a new car and an electric organ(they both played); but they both recognized that neither was financially a good choice. Dad; always being the practical one decided that a decent 'Hi-Fi' would give them both a little of what they loved...good musical sound. So; instead of the car or organ; they bought a top of the line High Fidelity Record player(sorry, don't remember the make). This necessitated some sort of stand to put it on. Looking around at what was available in those days; they realized that it was going to be another big chunk of money. My dad was not one to give up so he took a night school class on cabinet making and produce this cabinet. The catch to this whole story is that my dad knew how much my mom wanted that organ so he carefully chose the door handles to try and compensate. I can still remember the tears in my mother's eyes when Dad unveiled the stand with the Hi-Fi sitting on top of it(sorry, no pics...that was before cameras ;-) ). Anyway; just wanted to share one of my denser moments which also is one of my most lucid moments of revelation and one more thing that makes me miss them

Well, I have a vintage Dual 1019 turntable that will be amplified with a vintage TRIO TK250E. Still have lots of 78s, 33 1/3s and a couple of 45s to spin so I'll see how well it works a077

As soon as I looked at the cabinet handles, and right after seeing the hearts, . . . . . I had hard time to stop the tears in my eyes. I feel a knot in my throat, and again, I am trying to stop my tears . . .
This wonderful story reminded how much my parents loved each other. My father passed away in 2008 (R.I.P.) . . . . . And my sincere condolences to Peter and everybody who lost loved ones.
May the rest of our family live very long and healthy.
Capt. Serdal
