It's only 3BAR because it's for 'only the brave' 3bar is about 45psi. That's a lot of pressure if you think about it. When I was a kid, very few watches had any WR. Some of those watches are still running. Of course, some people put on a 20ATM watch to walk to the mailbox if it's raining. That said, that's an ugly watch.

Most 3ATM watches are described in owners' manuals as "for light rain and water splashes". While I don't use a 200M WR to go to the mailbox I require a minimum of 50M WR. I figure some day I may forget and immerse my hand and watch in water up to my elbow. I figure better safe than sorry.
As for your concluding sentence, you are indeed a master of understatement.

The reason that those charts only recommend splashing and fog for 3ATM is not because of the rating but because the manufacturers may have designed the watch to that tolerance but they don't actually test them and the lawyers are just covering butt. Any watch that is actually designed to 3ATM and then tested to that should be fine for anything up to; or as deep as 30 meters. Most manufacturers will have designed beyond that; ie Seiko going 20% beyond advertized rating for ISO dive watches(which are all tested at the factory). Did somebody say ugly? And maybe the 3BAR is only a reference to those three ugly bars running out from the center of the display

Don't see too many Timex w/that low a WR rating, but they are getting into brass cases lately, it seems.
