I have a very good reason to be happy tonight! Here’s the background…
With the exception of a mint 6119-6000 from Spencer (from a deal a few months back), there was REALLY nothing else incoming for me. In fact, in the past few months I have been flipping watch after beautiful watch to replenish a watch fund desperately lusting after an Omega Moonwatch and a Speedmaster Mk II. Proper examples of these 2 models are by no means cheap, thus my need to sell. Seeing those hard to find vintage Seikos slip out of my hands was an absolute pain but you gotta do what you gotta do when going after a grail (or in my case, grails).
On top of this I’ve been pining for a great grab and go daily wearer that can handle both the corporate and weekend setting. I was also looking for a GMT complication in particular, something I find quite useful on business trips. I needed a versatile, robust, no nonsense, waterproof, practical yet still elegant watch with GMT complication - a GMT diver was the logical choice. On my list was the new Kinetic Diver SUN019, the Aquadive Bathyscaphe 100 GMT and the Doxa 750T GMT among a few others. And in all this ‘wanting’ (well nowadays we don’t really ‘need’ a watch), I had to keep in mind that the funds are really meant for the Omega.
I had no idea how much the SUN019 cost as it is still a fairly new model. To be honest, the other choices were a bit too pricey given the fact that I have my heart set on obtaining a Speedy Mk II. So this afternoon I set about trying to find an online source for the SUN019 but all I got were press releases, reviews and a suggested price of US$800 or somewhere thereabouts. Having gotten good deals online, I never bothered with the local Hong Kong ADs but just before leaving the office tonight I thought maybe I’d give the distributor a call to ask when they expect to sell the new model and for how much. Lo and behold, they had one on offer at an unbeatable price! They had only one piece of each of the 3 variants on offer.
So long story short, I hauled ass and was there at 8pm and here are a few quick and dirty pics of the watch when I got home…
I’ll post better pics and more details this weekend but right off I can tell you this thing is an absolute beast! Especially on my 6.5in wrist! It is heavy and huge - around 48mm w/o crown and 15mm in width – but wears surprisingly smaller than what the figures might have you expect. The bracelet is 24mm and tapers to 22.
I’m really quite pleased. This watch ticks all the boxes for me. More later! Now I go to bed to prepare for that trip to Vietnam tomorrow…
