Today I picked up this most interesting Weekdater. The outside of the etched Dolphin case back is marked "J13080". Inside the case is engraved "J13080 MAW" Upon opening it reveals a 6206A, 26J movement at 19,800 bph. To my great surprise, it is 'gold tone' in color. Not sure if that's copper or some thin EP plating. So, can anyone explain why the case back is numbered J13080 and not "6206-8990" (or similar)? The inside is engraved 52XXXXX so it's from Feb. 1965. The thread above suggests that the 6206B came about in Feb 1965 so this makes a lot of sense. Here are some photos. I'll be in the market for a new dial, this is way too much WABI for me ! Seiko did not start the now-familiar xxxx-xxxx numbering system until about 1965. It was a this time that they renamed their existing calibers.
Yours was either right on the line of the transition, or it has had the movement replaced.

I have a 7625a powered Sportsmatic from '64 with similar numbering (821980) on the back and 820 rather than the 7625. Like yours the S/No.is on the inside of case back too. Any excuse to show this one as I absolutely love it. I also have a Sportsman from '63 (I think) which I have never opened up to see what it's powered by (probably a 66). Looks like 64/65 was the changeover time. All my 6xxx weekdaters have that lovely coloured movement.

All the 6206's I've ever had come with the gold coloured rhodium plated movement. The 6205's have the more usual nickel plated movements, as do the 6217's 6218's etc.
