Anyone here own a Seiko 5 Quartz? I think Peter had one back in the day. I was going through some old pictures and found these I had saved from an Ebay auction from back in 2009.

Yep, still have it... It has the 7123 calibre movement which is one of the early and crappy ones Seiko loaded in thousands of watches

Wait, are these genuine Seiko watches or bizarre fakes? I thought several of the 5 features that qualify a watch for the "Seiko 5" label only make sense for mechanical movements (automatic winding and unbreakable mainspring are two of them, right?)...

Genuine. And I'll raise you a Lion 5 (or 4) Aside from Noah Riley I can't find another person in 15 years who can claim they have at least one. The Spanish, Arabic, and Roman numeral date wheels only add to the mystery of the original market. Been there, done that, owned it. I should have jumped on this one I had to settle for this one

Well, I'll be damned. Interesting stuff.
Turns out the 5 points are (as everyone probably already knows):
1. Automatic winding 2. Day/date displayed in a single window 3. Water resistance 4. Recessed crown at the 4 o’clock position 5. Durable case and bracelet
So I suppose that only one of them is only applicable to mechanicals, the automatic winding. And I guess you could argue that a quartz watch meets the spirit of that requirement (i.e. "no manual winding").
Sure as hell ain't no recessed crown at 4 o'clock, though. That one surprised me, actually, I've seen plenty of 5's that violate that rule.

The original Japanese has been translated as automatic but it simple meant doesn't need winding which applies to quartz as well. We know they are legit because I e-mailed yserv Japan and asked. They verified that the '5' line had several quartz models made over a two or three year period(I forget which it was). But there are definitely fake Seiko 5 quartz and mechanical models out there. There are several threads here on the forum highlighting some of the worst!

Your list is correct if you consult the official Seiko Web Page for the 50th anniversary of "Seiko 5" - they uploaded this web page: www.seikowatches.com/5sports/50th/seiko5story/However I think not, and had always understood it was generally accepted that the "5" stands for: 1. Diashock 2. Diaflex (mainspring) 3. Day/Date 4. Automatic 5. Water Resistant I have seen Seiko 5 dial watches with 3 o'clock crowns, the aforementioned various Quartz 'Seiko 5' watches which are legitimate, and even this photo I took at the Seiko Outlet Store in the "Seiko 5" collection. Note date window at 4 o'clock but no day and with a 24 hr indicator sub-dial. Seiko has built millions of watches with either list of 5 attributes but no "5" logo on the dial too. Bottom Line: Adding the "5" logo to the dial it's nothing more than corporate Marketing, pure and simple.

Thanks for the corrections, folks! When I Googled that list up I thought "Gee, I don't remember those crown and bracelet things, I was sure there was more mechanical stuff in there the first time I read about this...", but I found it on an official Seiko website (the very one hibeat linked to), so I figured they knew what they were talking about. Apparently not!
