I just took delivery last night of a Citizen Promaster NY0040-09EB.
Does anyone know how to tell the age from the serial number and is there any user manuals on line, as my google fu isn't bringing anything up about it.
Thanks in advance.

I love that watch, very nice pick up. I think Peter (penguinbce), should be able to give you some info.

Telling the manufacture date for Citizen is very similar to the way it's done with Seiko. The serial number will be anywhere from 6 to 8 digits. The first number on the left is the year in the decade it was made. With 7 and 8 digit serial numbers the second and third digits will tell you the month; eg 04 = April. For the 6 digit numbers only the second digit(sometimes a letter; like Seiko) gives the month. The watch uses the Miyota/Citizen 8203 calibre automatic movement. It is a slightly revised version of the original 8200A that has been around since the mid 1970s. These watches are also ISO dive rated. This is about as good a user manual as you will find outside of getting an original that came with the watch(try eBay) www.thewatchsite.com/files/Citizen%20User%20Manuals/8205.pdfBTW...good looking watch I like to refer to it as the 'underpants' watch

I remember when those came out. I should have bought one but I was turned off from the Citizen brand due to an automatic dress watch with a hanging second hand when the case was tapped on the side which I later learned was normal due to using a sub seconds movement design being modified into a central seconds design (but don't let me wreck your fun

You can probably get all the dial colours too!

I don't need anymore watches that I don't wear. I have enough trouble with the ones I already own

I'm really pleased with it, although I bought it as the Seikos I was looking at, kept going past my budget.

Hi mate. These things are a good watch. I gave one to my son. He can normally stuff them in a matter of weeks, this one has so far foiled his best efforts. The original "instructions for citizen diver's watch automatic day/date" are quite basic. It's a folded A4 sheet - English one side and Spanish on the other. Model No NYO XXX Caliiber No 8203. Part No CTZ6748 1. Cheers Phil

LOL...that long winded blurb can be summed up with 'Miyota stutter' The 82xx series of movements have indirectly driven seconds hands. If the movement has been serviced or not quite properly adjusted upon assembly, the gear lash inside can make the seconds hand look like it is stopping and starting or skipping. It is just part of the deal with this type of movement and has no affect on time keeping

I looked today. You can get the rubber strap and the luminous dial versions, brand new for about $120. Mine has the stutter, but it is keeping time with my Neanderthal way of checking

I have always wanted a blue one or a yellow version. They are super cool looking watches that I think are under appreciated.
Congrats on it.
