Hi everybody this is my first thread beside introduction and couple of wrist shot on WRUW so please be easy on noob I love divers watch with unusual case design. "Tuna can" divers is one of them. I have a crushed on tuna can design first time i saw it years ago and they are in my whis list ever since. Couple months back i've decided to buy seiko tuna SBBN015. Great watch with superb finishing up to smallest detail. However as you all know it's a QUARTZ watch. It's not bad at all actually as i understand seiko puts quartz movement for Water Resistant purpose and 7c46 has been proven as reliable movement for a tool watch. One thing i admire from Seiko Prospex divers line up is they don't use Helium Escape Valve on their 300m dive watch, from my understanding the case should not only water resistant but also has to be very tight so that small helium particle will not enter the case. That's why they don't need HEV, CMIIW Ok back to the topic, though i am happy with my tuna, still i want to see sweep second hands of it. unfortunately i can't afford Seiko SBDX001 auto. So the story begins: The victim : my old moded seiko 6309 7040 I discussed with indonesian watch modder community and luckily we have a member to do this conversion (maybe you are the member of this board also, permission to post your great job): One thing i really like from tuna is its bezel so i buoght OEM seiko SBBN023 from rob mosterwatch, but later i noticed that my friend can replicate the bezel. He claimed he can replicate any kind of bezel as long as we provide him the example The result is okay i think unfortunately the bronze bezel is not mine The 6309 case machined and make the shroud. I know a senior member of a japanese watch forum from other board do this first, you inspire us, Sir. Thank you. I choose stainless steel shroud coz i plan to apply pvd coat later. We also have to extend the crown tube, we don't want to have sunken crown into shroud right ? Voila: Comparison with real seiko tuna. Not identical but acceptable and close enogh Essential dressing. Almost there Next: Reshape the lug PVD Coating To be continued

Nice work but have you pressure tested it? I don't think that crown extension will be water proof as you need the tube to extend inside the crown and seal against the gasket, but other than that its a great looking watch. I have a similar one made by The Tiger UK / John Bentley and I love it. I had a Tuna dial fitted to mine but I kept thinking that it was trying too hard to copy the real thing so I refitted the original 6309 dial and now I couldn't be happier with it.

I'd desk dive with it any day

Thank you for your kind words my friend. No i haven't done any pressure test as i know it will fail in the first place. I got two 6309 7040: one with original unrestored parts and the other with all aftermarket parts, this one. So i decided to mod this one. I've seen the Tiger UK mod and i love it too yours is beautiful, I love the combo with the pvd shark mesh Well done, she looks great! Thank you Sir Nice work but have you pressure tested it? Yes it was meant to be desk diving purpose only

Excellent work! I was recently given one of the prototype TSTs from John Bentley. The shroud was white plastic of some sort and I painted it with flat black then sealed it up with several coats of clear satin laquer... The shroud was as it came off the milling machine and I didn't do a very good job of cleaning it up. Chances are it would have looked like this after being worn for a while anyway

I have the .... " U.K. LOTTO Prize Bronze Shroud ", for my " TST ". This was said to be the Second Shroud he did. I also agree with the 7040 Dial in mine, like to be more unusual too maybe get a different type dial later on. Attachments:

Almost there Next: Reshape the lug PVD Coating To be continued Noken , if you did the crown threads much deeper and closer, more like a machined pitched one you might achieve water sealing. Follow the same as the originals and then it makes it a lot better to seal. Those threads are to shallow and the pitch of each thread is to wide. If they were deeper and closer then water pressure test might be better. Those threads will wear down faster if they are like that and the crown will eventually become loose fitting. The crown is great and looks nice. Smaller threads and closer to each other be a lot better. The use of a good (Thread Die and Tap) would be fine. The crown can then be grooved to fit a ( O-ring ) to fit better and seal tighter. When I did mine I did those threads like the originals are and then it past the (Pressure Test ) real good. I also took my case and went to the ocean and let it down to about ......... ( 400-500 ) feet with a weight and it did not leak, and I did that about (4) more times again too. I brought it back home and took it apart and re-sealed it again and couple days later we went out again did that again and it passed again. Also when you drill out for the screws on the Shroud make a little indent (Half through only) so as the screws hold to the case and not be floating loose but compressed to the case, it will hold stronger and the shroud wont move at all and wont break.
(Just my Machinist eyes working. ) That Bezel is a :winner:, it just looks out-standing.... Noken
But over all the your watch looks great and hope you are enjoying it too. You have great efforts in doing these, continue on and do more. Achieve and accomplish much more. Aloha from Hawaii ............ LongBike

Aloha Noken, You have talented hands and you have made fine products also. I like you Machined layout's and symetrical placement's of these various items in their making. It takes a lot of work to produce things and you have a good line of products made there. Also in making these pieces you show developmental placements and what they can accomplish.
Just a point: noken : Instead of the extended case tube, it should go with a extended Crown. If it would be used for diving it would be ....100 % more efficient and will not leak at all. Bigger and Extended Crown would look better too. The one piece case with a pressed in Factory Case Tube has a factory sealing. This is why they are .... " Pressed and Crimped ", inside when made. Being pressed and crimped is where it is all about for a tight seal. I tried a few and made them ..." Threaded instead of Pressed In ", and they have worked. If re-made properly it can be done also. ============================================================= Mine: This what I ended up with but since then changed the Insert and cleaned it up.Picture shows the Bronze Bezel but it wont shine in photo's. But it is highly polished now and I like it that way. It has a new ...... 6306A movement also inside of it. Today it is on a Shark Mesh, and all cleaned up too. The Movement shown in it is a all original Seiko ...6309-7049 one. I put a original Insert in it too also. Was going to change the hands but not just yet. Aloha and thanks for these photos and documentation's of what you are doing. Louis / LongBike
