Pardon my bad poetry, I am going to unveil two different Seiko 6105-8110 watches in one posting. One is a bit of a mash-up, but good enough to wear proudly and I won't worry so much if I scratch it. The other? Well, it's sweeter! :-D Here is the first package, from Ray Gonzalez. It looks a littler bigger than the normal Priority Mail bulk-rate box, which seems odd... Oh, wait, Ray is from Texas!! :-D Never mind! Inside we find some cheery green bubble-wrap. Like it's Christmas! Under that layer are what look like three individual bundles. I wonder what's up with that? I only bought one watch from Ray. Okay, two of the bundles are very light, and one is heavy. Let's start with the light ones, okay? Okay, the first one has the WJeans waffle strap. Check! The second light bundle has the re-lumed dial, and the old hardlex crystal. Ray says there is also the Yobokies hour and minute hands in there too. So that leaves the third, heavy bundle, which contains his Seiko 6105-8110. Recently serviced by Jack at IWW, with relumed hands and a replacement second hand, and a very 'blue" sapphire crystal, but the case and bezel look very nice and dial is nicely aged as well. Here is a closer look at the face. Like I said it's nice enough to wear with pride, but I won't freak out if I bang it against a door frame. ;-) Here is the case-back shot. A couple of dings at the lugs, but not bad. It looks like that rough texture on the case is how it was machined? And finally, the lume shot, with the bright hands (especially the minute hand!) and the nice old, dim hour markers and bezel pip. ****************************************************** Okay, that was the "beater" now for the "sweeter"!! :-D This one is from my favorite vintage Seiko diver seller, the time traveler himself, Mike "Mighty" Mounce! Upon opening the (slightly smaller!) Priority Mail bulk-rate box, a bubble-wrapped bundle presents itself. Looks like something is leaking out of that left side though! :-D Within the bubble-wrap is something rolled in foam wrap. Unrolling that I find two objects, one of which is half of an original, very rare XGL731 strap, in fantastic condition! :-O Digging further Mike's 6105-8110 is revealed, in equally fantastic condition!! I *love* these vintage Seiko divers, and I feel privileged to be able to have them in such incredible condition, but I'm not sure I can bring myself to where the ones like this! :-/ This seems like a museum piece, not just a watch I throw on my wrist on the way to work. Here is the case-back, my lighting shows it at it's worst, but the case is obvious very "clean". Here is a closer loo, it is simply stunning! 8-D Well, there they are; the "beater" and the "sweeter". :-D I hope you enjoyed the shows, now it's late, I have to get to bed. :-} Thanks for looking! - Thomas

Congrats on that '71 Thomas - truly amazing how some of these have held up.
The XGL-731 is my favorite vintage strap, and it's not very close. So comfortable. I wear it on my 6215. Cool to see one on a 6105.
Is the bezel insert on the second watch original, or a replacement (NOS?)? On all 3 of my 6105's, the pip isn't quite as bright as the dial/handset.
In any case - beautiful watches - thanks for sharing!

Glad you like it Thomas, lots of love spent on that watch as it was my first 6105. You should have a good runner for a long time; after I got back from Jack Alexyon in February this year I sent it to Spencer Klein for the original dial and hands it's on right now. While there he further checked and adjusted the movement. Don't beat it too hard! Best, Ray G

Nice finds indeed! The January '71 one is one of the very early resists, mine says hi - only a couple of hundred between both!

Hey Ray! Glad to see you here! ...after I got back from Jack Alexyon in February this year..." Wow, that's impressive! I hear he is "the best"! ... sent it to Spencer Klein for the original dial and hands it's on right now. While there he further checked and adjusted the movement... What? Who? Spencer Kline??? Who the heck is THAT?!? ( Okay everybody, relax, all of the above is in complete jest! ) Ray, folks are telling me the crown is not original on your watch, something about being able to tell from the number of "teeth" on it. Do you know anything about that? - Thomas

Honestly, did not know that, Mike, and was never pointed out or mentioned to me. It may very well be an aftermarket but has worked just fine.

Honestly, did not know that, Mike, and was never pointed out or mentioned to me. It may very well be an aftermarket but has worked just fine. I believe there are three different crowns around. They all differ in the number of fine splines. There are 5 spline, 7 spline and 8 spline ones. The 7 and 8 spline ones are OEM while the 5 spline is AM. I may have got the number of splines incorrect but I do remember that the two with more splines are genuine. One came original and the other was apparently a service center replacement.

Also, the aftermarket crowns I have seen don't work correctly with a full-length crown tube. The tube needs to be shortened to allow the crown to seat fully, otherwise they'll sort of sit away from the case by about a millimeter at least.

^^^^ Agreed. You can see the gap with an AM crown here, this is pushed home as far as it will go.

It's very true, I just noticed mine. I had an original crown with an old original gasket and since only a few people can apparently change these gaskets effectively I thought it best to use an AM crown as it was a more straightforward procedure. It doesn't seem to lock properly as the original, though there is some friction when turning. It's also a good thing that they seem to work fine and that not locking isn't directly related to water proofness.
