Hi gang, I should just wait until it gets here and do my usual unveiling, but I am so excited about getting a King Seiko I want to shout about it. I found what I think is an example in good shape, without excessive polishing, and hopefully all original, if you don't count the new red (why red?) leather strap. It looks like it is "only" a 5625 not a 5626, but I don't even know what the difference is! I purchased it on our "favorite" auction site, and was a little worried because the bidding stopped well below my preset maximum bid. And my maximum bid wasn't all that high, as the honorable seller was charging $50 for shipping! I have become more disciplined about that auction site, too. As I am sure many of you have learned, I figure out what my honest maximum price will be, bid that much and then DON'T WATCH! Although I will admit I set a timer on my phone for just AFTER the auction ended. It went off in the middle of a meeting, but nobody noticed and I was able to check and see that I won! Woohoo! - Thomas

Sigh... Of course, as I was posting the pictures it dawns on me that the medallion looks to have been replaced, as it is rotated 90 degrees from the usual position, right? Oh well, I hope the rest of it is as it should be. :imok: - Thomas

Looks like a nice watch. It has a good dial, and that seems to be the first thing to go on these watches. For some reason.
The 5625 is date only, the 5626 is day/date. They also made a 5621, which had neither day nor date. The "Achilles' Heel" of this movement is the day/date quickset mechanism. It involves a plastic gear set on a metal hub which advances the day and date. Seiko set the plastic gear so as to be a friction-fit on the hub, with the thought being that if the quickset were operated when the day and date were already changing over (around midnight), the gear could slip on the hub and there would be no damage to the movement. Problem is the plastic they used back in the late 1960s tends to shrink and crack over time, causing the gear to lose friction on the hub. This renders the quickset inoperable. Good spares are hard to find.
When buying any 56-series movement, from a 5606 Lord Matic to a 5646 Grand Seiko, the quickset is the first thing I ask about. About half still work, half don't. Hope yours does!
Great movement and great watch other than that.
PS: The medallion has definitely been replaced. Not only would Seiko never clock it 90 degrees out of position on a watch of this grade, the medallion has a Daini logo on it. The 5625, as is evidenced on the dial, is a Suwa movement.

Well, thanks to the help you all provided, it looks like I was able to cancel this purchase. I had sent two emails 24 hours apart to the seller, requesting the cancellation, as the medallion was not original, nor even the correct one and not installed correctly. I had not seen any response, so I called eBay support and they sent both of us an email with our respective phone numbers. I called the seller in Singapore at 8 am (8 pm Eastern) and he agreed to cancel the purchase. :-/ I hope to see full refund soon, so I can dedicate the funds toward that King Seiko Chronometer coming up in four days!! - Thomas
