I posted my 69799 Sportsmatic Silverwave on WRUW and it got a lot of likes but Mr lordflagpolecrabtree wasn't sure about the strap. Here's my thoughts, but second opinions are always welcome. The dial has tarnished over the years, to a coppery rose sort of colour. Hard to photograph, and changes with the light. When I first got the watch I was a bit dissapointed, but then I decided I liked it, and eventually I had the idea of highlighting the dial colour by getting a brown strap. The watch is quite small, thin and lightweight. It's the nearest thing I have to a dress watch, and I wanted to be able to wear it suited and booted, so I eventually I decided to try a snake, lizard or gaitor strap. I found the 18mm Seiko lizard strap in the photo, what do you all reckon? Here's the watch on a president style bracelet. I don't think this look right... And here's some bonus pics. The first is a fix done by a (Japanese) watchmaker to the upper barrel arbor mounting hole. There's no sign of the barrel rubbing on the mainplate or the bridge, so this fix must have been done almost as a preventative measure, I'm guessing, when the watch was serviced and the barrel was found to have a little too much play. The punch marks are really tiny and seem to have been done quite skillfully by somebody who knew what they were doing, so although it's a crude fix, I'm not too concerned. The second pic is corrosion on the crown. It's almost invisible to the naked eye, but looks nasty under magnification. Yes, that's a lego brick btw.

Well I almost always seem to be biased towards a bracelet and rubber. I would not say I have anything against lizard or ostrich but I would not buy one. as for the watch I think It is really cool

Hi Sam.
I think it's the texture of the strap that bothered me. If it were mine (Oooooooooooooooooooooh I wish ), I would put it on a padded black croc grain or similar.

It is a lovely watch which I would love to own. I'd plonk it on a Beads Of Rice as thats of the correct period, cheap enough to buy and not super tricky to find and they just look so bloody good!
I agree with Danni I don't like the strap it's on one bit. Sorry.

I'm not a fan, but then again, I wouldn't wear a strap like that one anything. I like Tony's suggestion of putting it on a BoR, would be nice IMO. The beauty of it is, your opinion is really the only one that matters.

Nice! I like the lizard strap you have on. I think it complements the patina developing on the dial quite nicely. The gold buckle needs to go though. It needs a proper polished, period correct Seiko buckle in my opinion. Case and hardware should always match if you ask me regardless of strap material.
I'm planning to put a similar strap on a '69 6119-6000 (when it eventually arrives) and I think it'll turn out great.

Personally I prefer the bracelet but also I usually don't use leather at all. Lizard seems more indicated to dress watches in my opinion.

It's difficult to judge straps in photo's. I think the strap on its own shows its true colour which is more chestnut brown. I think it could look nice but the president bracelet is too chunky. My preference would be the same as Tone's, for a period beads of rice bracelet. Bloody nice watch though regardless of bracelet/strap:-)
I have come across the punched hole in a number of old watches and clocks, its a recognised repair...er bodge.

I am not opposed to vintage leather, lizard or otherwise. But it has to match the look of the watch. Shiny, exotic, patterned leathers are best left to dress watches, particularly higher-end ones. That strap would look great on something like a '68 GS. Or even a '66 Sportsmatic 5. But on an early sport diver? Nope...doesn't fit. It's like putting a Datejust on a NATO or something. Just seems weird. As was mentioned by someone already, that watch is just dying for a BOR!

Thanks for all the replies. C4L18R3, I agree with you the buckle need changing.
The lizard strap is a bit dainty, but it does give a dress watch look that I'm happy with. I will keep my eyes open for a chunkier alligator strap, but they're not cheap.
But, since the vote winner is a BOR I promise will try the watch on one - when I get one. I've got a broken BOR that came on a Seahorse parts watch I bought a while back, so I'm sure sooner or later I'll get another...
