I thought robots were supposed to be about computers and electricity and such.
I think Seiko's marketing department should have waited a few years for the quartz revolution to put hat add out with the then current models.

I thought robots were supposed to be about computers and electricity and such.... I think we have to analyze the intent of the ad in light of the times then. When?? 1968 I'm guessing. No pocket calculators, no microwave ovens in the typical house. I think we still had a rotary phone then at home. Oh yeah, and black and white TV ... or we were just about at the point of deciding whether to switch to color, can't remember the exact time-frame. Oh yeah, and before the color TV it was ALL VHF, no UHF stations on the dial!! Certainly nobody (aside from some futurist scientists like Vannevar Bush) thought we'd have personal computers, Internet access, cellphones, and other electronic marvels predicated on the development and commercial viability of the Integrated Circuit. Cable TV?? Nah! We had "rabbit ears", nothing else available than broadcast TV with only a handful of channels. And any electronics were analog, no digital yet in the home!! I had a computer back then, from Radio Shack. No, it wasn't a "Trash 80", it was a science kit (cardboard made up the 'container' for the electronics) - it was an analog computer, not digital. It had no keyboard, no CRT, just some leads that hooked into linear resistors [boards wound around with wire] and a meter for display. Oh yeah, I still had a slide-rule to take to school to do computations on!! At least there were no batteries to replace .... Cars had carburators, mechanical mostly. I think a few had some electronic components, not sure if electronic fuel injection had come out then or not. If not, it was all mechanical. No ABS, no electronic traction control. Don't even remember mechanical/hydraulic traction control systems being offered much (if at all) in those years. My 1st car was a '68 Camaro ... NO electronics to speak of in there!! Heck, the ORIGINAL Star Trek series was still a relatively new phenomenon back then (with all the cheezy special effects). Like the automated doors that opened for anyone who was authorized to pass thru ... done by hand by people hidden behind the wall.. but we did have Supermarkets with automatically opening doors in real life (used the "Electric Eye" technology!!). The talking computer ... we all figured it would never happen in our lifetimes ... guess what: my laptop speaks to me everyday to say that a virus database has been updated {plus it plays music & video files when I ask it to}. Never expected to see that in my lifetime either back in those days (mid -> late '60s). So, having lived in that era, I'm not overly surprised by Seiko {Hattori Corp.} calling a fully mechanical thing a "robot". Remember the robot on Lost in Space ... not the movie, the ORIGINAL TV series from mid '60s? That wasn't much better even though it did use electricity

Off topic, but I kept meaning to say it somewhere ... cdgod: RE: "Now, I am become death, the destroyer of worlds" J. Robert Oppenheimer. Well, that's true, he (Oppenheimer) did say it when Trinity [1st atomic test blast] occurred in July '45. But - he was just quoting Shiva at the time ... Shiva is reported to have said it a few thousand years before Oppenhiemer. :-/

I'd say it's in the '70-72 timeframe. I have other ads that carry the same tagline and the earliest is 1970.
Perhaps a better word would have been "automaton" rather than "robot". But it doesn't roll off the tongue as well.

If you like something online you better download it and save it because the free interweb and I can "Google it when I need to" is a thing of the past.

Yeah, I was thinking about the same thing with respect to the "automaton" thing (or a similar replacement for "robot") ... but then again, the mass population related to the word "robot" and likely most would not really understand "automaton". "Marketing logic" prevailed I guess!!

RE: "Now, I am become death, the destroyer of worlds" J. Robert Oppenheimer. ... But - he was just quoting Shiva at the time ... Yep Yeah, I forgot that clip - I'd seen it played on WWII documentary shows before & I know he attributes the quote to Vishnu, but isn't it really Shiva who is (in Hindu philosophy/religion) considered to be " Destroyer of Worlds"? Not sure if he's correct in attributing that to Vishnu. And by the way, in Bhagavad Gita (a small part of the Mahabharata epic) ... it isn't really Vishnu directly who talks with Prince Arjuna just before the battle, it is really his Avatar, Krishna (who assumes the role of Arjuna's chariot driver). I read the Bhagavad Gita many years ago but I can't remember that part exactly ... verse 32 from chapter 11 is what is supposedly quoted by Oppenheimer according to various sources. But, check out these links that attribute the "Destroyer of Worlds" concept to Shiva rather than Vishnu: answers.yahoo.com/question/index;_ylt=AwrTHRPaBFtUiBcAuiBXNyoA;_ylu=X3oDMTEzZ25wbG9nBHNlYwNzcgRwb3MDNQRjb2xvA2dxMQR2dGlkA1ZJUDU0Ml8x?qid=20080521102835AArVW03titled as ""...now I am become Death [Shiva], the destroyer of worlds..." .Robert Oppenheimer. Your Comments Please ." And from Wikipedia ... "the cosmic functions of creation, maintenance, and destruction are personified by the forms of Brahma the creator, Vishnu the maintainer or preserver, and Shiva the destroyer or transformer." Heck - even on Facebook: www.facebook.com/pages/Shiva-The-Destroyer-of-Worlds/137580052942194Look, it's a doggy!! Anyway, one source does claim his statement was a misquotation of Bhagavad Gita: oupacademic.tumblr.com/post/55172404789/misquotation-i-am-become-death-the-destroyer-ofand that section of B.G. really says (in translation) ... "I am all-powerful Time which destroys all things, and I have come here to slay these men. Even if thou doest not fight, all the warriors facing thee shall die." Another site shows it should be, {"The exact quote from the Bhagavad-Gita is:" they say} "If the radiance of a thousand suns Were to burst at once into the sky That would be like the splendor of the Mighty one... I am become Death, The shatterer of Worlds." So ... I'm not sure - but I do remember Shiva being considered "destroyer" traditionally, not Vishnu. Oh well! UPDATE: Hey I like the following translation I just found ... "I am created Shiva, the Destroyer, Death, the shatterer of worlds. Who is this dog meat that challenges me?" Hmmm, maybe it's little Shiva the doggy from Facebook???

Ha, never saw this ad before. And hey, I have my own little robot: I like the part that says: " Because you pay only for the timepiece, not the time it took to make it."
