Why is the final digit on the movement number on the caseback stacked like that? someone couldn't decide what was under the hood?

It's a transitional model...started out as a 3862 at the beginning of the assembly line and ended up as a 3863 by the time it rolled by the final QC robot

The transition from 3862 to 3863 occurred in July 1974. Now we find the exact case when that happened. Josh you're a coin guy - this is like a rare mis-strike coin - too bad it doesn't increase it's value, eh ? I just finished a fascinating read. The 3863A was a VFA capable of +/- 5 seconds per month - not as good as the original +/- 10 seconds per YEAR that my 9943- Grand Quartz Twin Quartz was claimed to have, but darn good nonetheless.

Hi Here's mine with the same thing, I've never seen one of these cases with a 3862 inside, they all seem to have the 3863's in them, the only ones I've seen that have 3662's in them always seem to have the standard case text with no stacked numbers.

Seiko got cheap, and this was a way to either economize or speed prodution. They did the same thing in the 60s with some 8306/8346 models.
