Hello All,
Best wishes from the dark continent.
I have never really considered myself much of a watch guy. I have owned and worn the same old aviator-style Seiko every day for the past 12 years without knowing very much about watches except that I was pretty happy with the one I had, but thought that maybe someday it would be nice to have one of those chunky Rolex models - I think they have a red and blue two-tone face?
Then, a few months ago, my wife suggested that I should consider getting a new watch, perhaps even a really good watch, for my 40th birthday, which is this year. She knows that I am pretty particular about what I like, so she suggested I do some research and let her know. So I looked up those Rolex watches that I recalled and found they were indeed pretty awesome! The ones I liked turned out to be called the 'GMT' and the 'Submariner', but they were pretty pricey, even on the second hand market. I also liked the Omega Seamaster Diver with the blue face.
Decisions decisions. But by know I was also learning a lot about watches - like some don't even need batteries! Can you believe it?
I also remembered that I was still pretty fond of my old Seiko, and maybe they might have a new model that might tickle my fancy? So I looked them up on the net and found, amongst other things, you chaps. I also learned that Seiko make a ton of watches that I like, especially the old dive-style watches and some of the other vintage models like their chronographs. The other awesome thing was that, if I could find one of these old Seiko's, I could probably buy it, and still be able to send my two young boys to university one day. Bonus.
I then began the arduous task of trawling the local pawnshops and on-line classifieds. And let me tell you these pawn shops are pretty special where I live - you can either sell your stolen goods for a fraction of what they are worth, or just do a straight swop for crack.
Anyway, the searching in the last few months was fun for the most part, and I even think I found one or two pretty cool watches, and at decent prices too.
I now have more than one watch, all of them Seiko's, and most of them pretty old. It turns out that I may be a watch guy after all, as I absolutely love my new (old) acquisitions. My favourite, and the one I wear most is called a 6309 7040 (weird name) and is one of the best looking watches I have ever seen (and it doesn't need a battery). My next favourite is an awesome watch that looks like a can of tuna and can go 600m down on a dive! I'll post pics at another time.
I have also really enjoyed reading the different posts on this forum, and realise some folk out there know plenty about their watches.
Thanks for having me,
Marc
