Hey guys, I want to buy my dad a new watch, he has been rocking the same Seiko everyday for 31 years now. He bought it new in 1984, it is a quartz watch that he has loved. Worth nothing, and still accurate as ever. The problem is the dates are starting to act funny. I'll try sneak a picture in of it for you guys to see. I want to buy him a new watch, and would like to enlist your expertise to help me find the perfect one. Not in a rush, so no pressure there. I'm trying to not stray too far from what he has now, as for 31 years you're so comfortable, it'd be awkward to wear another watch. - I would prefer a quartz, simply because he isn't the type of bloke to go and get it serviced. He is an engineer but watches are not his thing. Quartz is good enough and tells him the time, rather than worry about why is it losing/gaining time etc.

Day/date is preferable. Date at the very minimum. - Black face.
- Preferably no numbers, just markers.
- He won't wear a divers watch, it has to be clean.

I really like this (but its auto): I think Japanese is the way to go. I really like Seiko and think he would like to continue wearing Seiko, but I'll open the floor to you guys. My Budget? AUD $200/USD $160/GBP 110 Thanks guys! George

I don't even mind if it is second hand, albeit in good condition. I will have a look at some of those you've posted. The last few seem pretty bang on, thanks for that

This is on Ebay right now. I like it because the day can be set to Japanese, but it can also be set to English. This is a JDM model, and they are typically a little better in terms of quality than the stuff Seiko exports en masse. Type in "Seiko Spirit" on Ebay and it should come up.

Before buying a JDM watch off eBay, check Rakuten - kind of the Amazon of Japan - many sellers ship to the US, and prices are often less than you'll find the watch from a middle-man.
For example, the SCDC085 above can be found for <$100 new (+ ~$20 in shipping).

Buy the watch you pictured (SCVS003 I think). I have one, and it is A. Maze. Ing. Re: auto over quartz, he doesn't need to send it off for preventative servicing if that's what you're worried about. The swiss companies tout that, but I (and many) think it's a bunch of garbage. As soon as the watch starts keeping time less regularly, sure, but otherwise, wear and enjoy.\\You can get that model in excellent condition for ~$300
