Hi Everyone,
The message says "introduce yourself", so here goes...
I'm a Brit, living in Singapore and just starting to develop an interest in vintage watches. I made a strange or even foolish entry into this world, because my first purchase was a Rolex Explorer 1, 6610 from 1958 & it was rather expensive! Why did I do this? Well, after years of hesitation, I was finally going to treat myself to a new Rolex but after reading several watch forums, the bug of buying a vintage watch instead of a new one bit me in a big way & I took the plunge. I was careful, did a lot of research and bought from a reputable dealer in Germany and a vintage Rolex specialist in Singapore confirmed that it's all genuine, original and in great condition. Whilst it was expensive, I did pay a lot less than another identical model he had seen a few weeks earlier, so I felt pretty good about the deal (probably very dangerous - I can't be that lucky every time!!). I love the watch but am too chicken to wear it every day, so I'm looking for interesting alternatives.
Over a few months, I bought 3 Vostok Amphibians (so cheap at $56 a time, 31 jewel automatic, 200m divers) and customized them with better bezels and leather straps. They make decent daily watches and are interesting but not really satisfying somehow.
The Rolex was the model worn by Tenzing Norgay on the famous Everest expedition & that somehow has given me this idea of collecting other "firsts". Omega Speedmaster Pre-moon, cal 321s are on my list but too expensive to consider at this time, so I've been reading about Seikos. I'm sure I don't need to explain why to anyone here!!
One of the "firsts" I am looking at is the 6139 6002 "Pogue" but I'm not sure about the orange dial. My first question; is a black Pepsi style of the same reference still a Pogue? Many are advertised as such. Second question; does anyone have advice on this listing on eBay please? It seems solid enough but I am very aware of the risks and all advice would be gratefully received:
*Link to live auction has been removed*
Any thoughts on the price I should be willing to pay? I'm mystified by the prices people are paying on eBay, when there seem to be pretty good examples on Chrono24 from dealers at lower prices. This is one sold on eBay yesterday for US$ 556:
www.ebay.com.sg/itm/281587362484?ssPageName=STRK:MEWAX:IT&_trksid=p3984.m1438.l2648
Yet, here's an example on Chrono24 for US$ 342. Can anyone help me to understand this please? Why risk eBay??
www.chrono24.sg/seiko/pogue--id3095393.htm?query=seiko+6139+6002&dosearch=true&searchexplain=1&dosearch=true&urlSubpath=/search/index.htm
I read on a buying guide that the inner rotating bezel should be the same colour as the dial & that a white bezel with an orange dial is almost certainly not original. However, the actual watch worn by William Pogue has a white bezel. Does that mean he had changed it??

Once again, I'm confused and would appreciate any advice from the experts please.
Another day I'll ask for help on the 62MAS but that's another story altogether...
Thank in advance to anyone who bothered to read all this rambling and especially to anyone who can enlighten me!

Haven't had time to look at all your choices, as I have to get to work, but avoid the first seller like the plague ! Search his name on any watch forum Tony Cockroach has a nice one for sale, and I'm sure someone knowledgeable will chime in soon.

Well hello and great to have you with us...at first this can be a little confusing...but dont worry...we are here to help...well the 6139 6002 or 6005...they are great watches...extremely well made...they need to well cared for...the coronel you speak of the inner bezel is very sun faded that is why it appears to look white..it would have been all yellow when new...the bay can be a great source to find all original watches..best to find one that have not been restored or have been professionally restored...CockRoach on here is the best to talk about a 6139...he is very well trained and has very high standards in the watches he sells...just look on the selling section and you will see his examples...if you need anything please do not hesistate to ask...God Bless John

What he said . Have looked at the other auctions (BTW, live auction links are not allowed, but I don't think anyone would buy any of these anyway ) The second one looks as if it has at least an aftermarket dial and inner ring. The third has hands that look too new and an obviously wrong coloured inner ring. The fourth has the wrong minute hand (small register). There may be other things wrong with it, and the others, but I don't know enough about them without researching. Edit: Just realised the final link is for the actual, original as worn by Colonel Pogue himself watch ? Not sure about that ! But I could be wrong. Welcome! Didn't like any of those watches you listed. Not even Colonel Pogues one! (bit of a pig but a pig with history). The one you just asked about was from the original owner It's 100% the real deal. Fully serviced and I love it. It also has the rare narrow h-link bracelet. Let me put it this way.... I've been hovering over the keyboard ever since listing it as I nearly kept it myself. I have been wearing it nearly every day since finishing restoring it Those proof dial watches are just so hard to come across (proof earliest dial type). A lot of guys will hate me for saying this but I like all my watches to be original movement, dial and case. I will 'not' swap parts over from one watch to another apart from hands, crystals or bezels if the originals are super faded or dented to hell. If I buy a 1975 watch I like to think every 'major' part started life off with that watch. Otherwise it becomes a marriage not a genuine watch in my humble opinion. There is nothing wrong with breaking watches to repair others as long as it's mentioned in the sale or if the buyer asks but it's not for me. As I say yours came from the original owner who's father brought the watch for him 40 years ago when the guy was 15 years old. Best wishes, Tony

Again, thank you so much to all of you who helped, especially Tony. What a great experience! Restored my faith in humanity! I feel that I've got an absolutely fair deal and can't wait to receive and wear what will be a very special watch for me. Very best wishes from a very happy Brit in Singapore.

So, that didn't work, as I suspected it wouldn't. Never mind, it's all about learning

Sorry, my mistake...it was Dani. No problem; just didn't want dallamark to get me confused with all the other trouble makers

It was my mistake and I apologise. Won't happen again. I didn't read the rules carefully enough.

It was my mistake and I apologise. Won't happen again. I didn't read the rules carefully enough. Hey, more than half the new folks trip over this one so don't beat yourself up. The rule is there to try and give bidders who have already found the auctions a chance of winning without a whole forum piling on and driving the end price through the roof Finish auctions are fine. If you see an auction that has a watch that is being grossly misrepresented or is an obvious fake, then post the link so others can be warned off.

Makes perfect sense. Thanks for the warm welcome to WS everyone. I lived in Singapore in the 60s and have fond memories of the place. I was a teen at the time and this was probably a formative time of my life. Not really into watches back then but there was a watch that planted the seed; it was a Rado of some sort. It had a hexagonal crystal/bezel on a roundish case. It's long gone now but it was the first watch I remember attempting to repair(read destroyed completely). What brought you to Singapore?

My job took me to Asia about 19 years ago, first India, then China and now Singapore for the past 9 years. My wife is Chinese, so it is the perfect place for us. Both English and Chinese are widely spoken, it's a great place, with lots to do and has great weather. I imagine it was more interesting in the sixties, before it was as modern as it is today. Do you ever get the chance to go back and visit? It's definitely a place where watches are popular and appreciated.
All the best , Mark
