Don't they call the caseback on the left a Horseshoe Yep. Seiko had mostly done away with this style by 1973, but the occasional one will show up that is dated later.

In the case of 6139-600X's I think it was 76' by the time Seiko made the transition to the newer style case back and even then they still used the horseshoe style more often then not.

I have 75 made 6139's and 76 and this matches with Tom's dating 100%.

Right now on fleabay there is a November '76 with a horseshoe and an earlier January '76 that is not. You guys really know your stuff. Always impressive to read what you share of your knowledge. See below (maybe have to click to enlarge) shows a Jan 76 Non-Horseshoe and a Nov 76 that still is Horseshoe. The Nov 76 is blurry on the listing so I added the full tag in case you wanted to see it for yourself.

well, I spoke too soon! I have a customers watch in front of me, a 6139-6005, dated Nov. 75' with the later style case back......... Anyone have an earlier 6139-600X with the later style case back?

If a case back on a Pogue (yellow dial /pepsi bezel) reads 6139-8020 then it's a incorrect case back?

If a case back on a Pogue (yellow dial /pepsi bezel) reads 6139-8020 then it's a incorrect case back? Yes, that would be correct. Pogue's all fall under 6139-600X unless your super persnickety then I believe it would have to be a 6139-6002.

It has the wrong dial for a 6002. I am pretty sure it is a 6005, and Jose's write-up doesn't show the caseback. I remember Bruno's original SCF thread about this, as you may as well, and am almost positive it was a 6005?

How did the dials differ between 5 and 2?

The 6002 dial will be marked "SEIKO Chronograph Automatic". The dial number will be "6139-6030T".
The 6005 dial will be marked "SEIKO Automatic 17J". The dial number will be "6139-6009T".

since were talking about 6139 cases. Can someone attempt to explain notched cases and there origins and some idea of a timeline regarding there use and on which models/variants???
Example Blue dial, 6139- 6009 ser#035754 has notch Blue dial, 6139- 6009 ser# 134922 no notch
Is it just the early production pieces that have the notch

Notched cases were used from 69' to mid 70' on Proof and Resist models. From what I've observed and through collecting the notched case was used up until July of 70'
