This just back from the watchmaker this morning, she's working well and keeping time! I have no idea when it was made, the case back is absolutely plain. Everything is in decent condition though, if i'm not mistaken a Seiko Gyro Marvel is Seiko's first automatic watch. Enjoy the photos!

here's some info from WatchUSeek .. I think it quite accurately dates the watch :
- Gyro Marvel: (Sub-brand) - The Gyro Marvel was Seiko’s first independently developed automatic watch. It was introduced in 1959, as a subset of the Marvel Line. The Gyro Marvel’s caliber is based on the Marvel caliber and exist only in a 17j version. Like the Marvel, they formed Seiko's top watch line of watches during the late 1950’s. Sadly, the Gyro Marvel was relatively short lived and was replaced in Seiko’s lineup by the Seikomatic in 1960. The price of a Gyro Marvel in 1959 was JPY5,900.
More info, gleaned from a book and published on TZ-UK .. this paragraph is specific to Seiko ..
The first automatic wristwatch was introduced in 1955 and had a Swiss raw movement by A. Schild, the AS-Cal 1382 with power reserve. The "Gyro Marvel" (Magic Swivel), introduced in 1959, hs an automatic winding system developed by Seiko. The base movement, which had either been supplied by ETA or was a copy of the ETA movement, is wound by a ball-bearing mounted central rotor. The rotor can develop sufficient momentun to for (sic) the simple excenter reversing wheel system and operates with a central winding lever, the so called Magic Lever. This winding system is very similar to the Eppo-system developed by the West German Otero comapny in 1954.

That's a beauty Dave. The age info is possibly inside the case back ? I think this is correct. My 1964 sea horse has the date inside the case back.

A very nice find, congratulations! I always keep my eyes peeled for a Gyro Marvel but haven't found a decent enough one yet. I do have a 1957 Marvel though and the Gyro Marvel was developed from this calibre.
