I want to buy a gift, men's Seiko 1961, but I can't seem to find the styles available for that year. Any references, info, or examples of any style would be helpful.

An actual 1961 catalog would be a truly rare beast - worth several hundred dollars - I don't know in what form these even exist. I have a number of books which catalog Seiko watch history, including watches from this period. I'll post some pics when I'm home later. In the meantime, if you're looking for the #1 option for a watch from this period, it's the GS3180, the first Grand Seiko. These were made in significant volume for multiple years, so they're prevalent, but the price climbs very quickly with condition: The first Alpinist was also from 1961, it's a great choice, but it's rare in good condition and exceedingly rare in great condition:

Thanks estrickland, I believe I have noticed you have many catalogues in your collection! If you could post some examples I would be so appreciative. I had read somewhere about the GS debuting around that time. This will be a fun hunt.

Of these, other than the GS and Alpinist, I'd say the 1961 King Seiko is the winner.
Note that it's probably of very modest size, like all of these watches.

Well I got up early due to a phone call, decided to glance here while I made coffee..... estrickland I am stunned and amazed! Let me say how grateful I am for this information, and for the time you took to post images. Thank you! Yes the KS , GS and Alpinists are very nice. How about some of those dials?! Ready to start searching!

On YJ, $1250 - $1500 for an example like the one pictured, but you never know - sometimes bidders dig in and sometimes they don't - you could get lucky and maybe find a nice one for less.

Sort of odd take on the watch like the case of the bullhead... I like things like that.

I don't know if it would work for me as my neck would end up cracking every time I needed to know the time!
