...rather than pack them. www.cnn.com/2015/04/13/us/airport-luggage-theft/index.htmlMy favorite part (and the relevance): "The problem has been so serious at JFK that in 2013, El Al Airlines set up a hidden camera in a baggage hold. The camera showed baggage handlers stealing items on flights bound for Israel, including a $5,000 Seiko watch, iPhones, an iPad, cameras, gold rings and cash. Six of those arrested pleaded guilty to possession of stolen property or petty larceny and the seventh suspect's case was sealed, according to the Queens District Attorney's Office."Must have been a GS but I wonder how many people read the article and choke on the notion that Seiko makes a $5K watch.

I always carry-on all my valuables, in a shoulder bag, I never trust baggage handlers.

When I moved back from the states I lost everything in one container that fell overboard in a storm! It's likely still bobbing around in the sea.

In addition to this the latest news concerns seat size and in case you were wondering, yes they're getting narrower.Airlines can stuff more passengers in their planes. Not sure what's worse, being profiled as a potential terrorist or being herded aboard like livestock.

It makes them feel safe. I've witnessed some even thanking the TSA. Yes, thanks for treating me like I'm being processed for intake at Rikers Island.

I flew a lot during the 80's and 90's for business. I flew first class a lot because I enjoyed the creature comforts they provided...a decent meal....a comfortable seat....a movie....a hot towel after your meal. I never minded spending the extra money because I felt it was worth it. Now people even bring their own food on the plane....it's more like riding a Greyhound bus. These days it's a freakin' cattle call...lines to stand in....having to take off your shoes....rude people everywhere

IMHO, it's just plain stupid to put anything of value in a suitcase that you lose personal custody of. The airlines are going to fight you tooth and nail before they pay you a red cent and the baggage handlers are union so unless you catch them red handed (maybe not even then) there are no consequences for going through luggage to find valuables.
I don't travel often but if I do fly, I hate it and will opt out of the microwave ovens they make you stand in.
IMHO, it's just plain common sense to keep your valuable items in your personal possession when your out in public. Would you leave your watch box out in the middle of the street and walk away?

It was actually a pleasant experience back then. Traveling for business meant I usually wore a suit and this always got me better treatment than the average person in shorts and flip-flops. My last palne ride was just before George Bush declared Canada a terrorist nation and closed the border. Prior to that, I touched down and visited every state except Montana, North Dakota and Florida. I did business in and have good memories of all the other states

I've flown all around the world and it certainly beats walking. Think they say 95% of American's have never left the country. In the UK it's hard getting folk to stay!

Here's a little tip for those flying semi-regularly to justify the expense. Pay yourself or even better get your employer to pay for the Global Entry application. This requires a background check and finger printing, but in return you are deemed safe enough to experience air travel the way we used to pre 9/11. Security will use Pre-Check lines which is expedited and you don't have to take off your clothes and shoes and don't have to take out your bag of liquids. For return for international travel you can use the kiosk at US boarder entry and there's a little card for Canada and Mexico crossings so no more mean and grumpy customs agents. I think the application was $100 and took about 2 weeks with a personal visit to the local office which was in my airport. Lasts 5 years so $20/year isn't so bad. Sorry, US only, but I'm sure other countries have figured out that they can make money off premium travel services. www.cbp.gov/global-entry/about#.html

I just put anything I would hate to loose in my carry on bag. Who puts an expensive camera, laptop or watch into the hold anyway these days.
I do the same if we travel by long distance train to north Finland or Russia. If it doesn't fit it doesn't go.
Same goes when we take the big boats to Sweden or Estonia.
