I picked up this 6138-0017 case recently and had some questions about its finish. I can see the brushed lines on it, but it also has a kind of high polish sheen to it. Is this due to wear, or a partial polishing of the case? Here are some pictures of it: Thanks!

Looks like it has a poor refinishing job at best.

I thought so. I was going to make a project out of it, but I think I'll be putting that on hold for a bit.

That's been polished.
If you brush the top of it, will look MINTY!
The sides have a pattern going left to right.

To get the correct finish is tricky as they used a very fine flapper wheel and a jig. To get the crisp edges back is going to prove tricky without a jig even for someone like myself who is use to working with metal. Don't get me wrong you'll get a good finish but it will never likely look 100% factory if that's what your going for. Most so because the edges have already been rounded by the polishing. PM me your address. Pay the postage and I'll send you a nice unpolished case for nowt.

Send it to Shawn . . . . you WILL NOT REGRET IT! It will look as good as the day it came out of the factory (or as close as possible given case wear). Not sure if he (Dcso211) is still offering this service but I'm almost 100% sure that he did the case work on mine. Spencer can comment as I bought the watch from him:

Thanks for the "Nod" on the case work Bob... Unfortunately, my other hobbies demand more time than I currently have to spare.....so I made the executive decision to shut down my watchmaking business. I'm now working specifically to clear off my bench from a 2 month backlog of work. On that note... Here are a few photo's of the correct finish method for the 6138-0011/0017 series cases. Top side has a circular brushed finish. The case bottom is polished, the angular sides have straight brushed finish The case sides are brushed, but the caseline needs to be kept crisp.....I usually apply this with a block of oak wrapped in 320 grit. slowly rotate the case on an arbor. The watch began life as this....

I'm pretty sure you did the case of the 6138 Yachtsman / UFO that I acquired from Spencer. I'm now glad I added a qualifier about not knowing if you still offered the service. I'd hate to get the OP's hopes up only to find the service unavailable.

Thanks Bob, I can confirm that I did do the case work on your yachtman......I do all of Spencer's customer case refinishing work. It's been that way for the past few years since i took over Jonathan's work load before he got really ill. As to my exit from the business......very simply, it was just the right time. Like Spencer, I've become tired of the crazy email volume and the related BS that follows that. The hobby turned less enjoyable and I just became burned out. So much so, that with the exception of just two special watches, I've sold off every Seiko that I owned and have absolutely no regrets.

The closeup shot of the crown/pusher side shows that the case has been reground and not all that well either :-/ Sadly that case is a goner from an originality point of view.

I thought that was the case but now I know for sure. I can certainly understand you getting out . . . when the fun goes out, why bother. As for selling off the Seikos, as long as there are no regrets then it's all good. You've also got that bad ass Citizen that the wife gave you. That's gotta be a special keeper no matter what!
