I wanted to start a thread about the Y513 quartz movement. I’ve read a lot about the Pulsar Y513 movement as an alternative base to a fried Seiko 754x movement and it is also the engine to some fantastic Pulsar watches from the late 70’s to early 80’s. I recently picked up this beauty It stopped and I went to replace the battery and found this Hamazawa 2 jewel movement. Initially I was a little worried I had some weird modded quartz, then I saw the coil that looked familiar inc the obvious potential damage. A little research suggested that this company was likely a subsidiary of Seiko at one time. So the two obvious things I can see are the plastic circuit board and the two jewels. I will likely replace the coil and see if I can find a spacer ring for the movement as it appears missing. Just wondering if anyone had come across a pulsar branded y513 and any other info they can share about the differences in this movement. I’ve come across this thread but thought it worthwhile to title a discussion on it. wristsushi.proboards.com/thread/10123Cam

Hamazama was a subsidiary of SEIKO. Originally I think they were their own thing but SEIKO bought them and used the name for this sort of stuff.
Back in the day, the fix for a 7546 was to swap in the Pulsar movement, much like we do these days with the SII movements.
I had a 7549 here a bit back that has been swapped with the Pulsar movement.

Do you still have a 7548, Cam? First step would be to see if that coil can be swapped in and if it works with the replacement coil?

Wondering if there is increased strain on the battery from the coil or mechanism. Does a coil either work or not work?

Wondering if there is increased strain on the battery from the coil or mechanism. Does a coil either work or not work? Pretty much. Other than broken wires, the only thing that might happen is the wire windings become more resistive; but with such low voltage and current, that is quite unlikely. Dirty movement and/or old lubricants are more likely causes. Next in line would be an aging/failing electronic module.

I've had one of these Pulsar's (Poor Man's Tuna) since the early 80's. I got it from the original owner who was a co worker. I can pop off the case back and check the movement if you like.

I think it’s a standard movement from what I’ve googled. I’d only do it if the battery needs changing.

I snagged one of those a while ago to scavenge for parts for the Seiko mov’ts and just couldn’t bring myself to do it. I’ve got several other pulsars with the same mov’t so I figured I’d spare this one. Anyway, mov’t is same as the others. Notice the Hamazawa stamp inside the case back. Oh, mine also was missing the casing ring. iPhone cameras apparently don’t work well with the fluorescent desk lamp Hands look like directly lifted from the Seiko divers.

Cam, I have a working Y513 that I picked up to drop into a 6309 diver mod but it is old such that it can't muster the torque to run the date and day change wheels. Once it gets past the date change part it runs flawlessly until it approaces day and date change again. I would think all it needs is a good cleaning.
If you need some parts let me know.

These movements were also found in the old Phasar quartz watches that Sears sold back in the day.

meanoldmanning it makes me wonder if it has a movement retaining ring? well sorry i am late to the party.... i just got a Pulsar Y513 6019 and mine has a movement retaining ring.... they are quite fiddly and i see why maybe someone would remove it... the little spring around it gets easily stuck.... i had found one of these years ago from a Ramon Purchase which turned out to be a 7c43 case with a Pulsar Y513 movement... funny how things go God Bless,John

Digging up an old thread!
I bought a cool Pulsar Quartz Diver Y514-6009 from 1983. Movement is super clean. Still had old 301 battery with no leaks. A fresh battery didn't get the movement working. Trying to find a donor movement. What's the difference between the Y513 and Y514? I have a few working 513's around and am wondering if they are swappable? If not, is there a Hattori or even Miyota equivalent I could buy. It'll be cheaper just to swap then to service if it can be. Thanks!

Can you post a pic of the movement? I’ve been considering selling my 513, hasn’t had much wrist time.
Ive had a tiny search. It looks like the y513 is the day date y514 is date only.
I’d check the coil first off and the parts from all Seiko 754x will substitute.
The pulsar has less jewels from memory but is otherwise identical.
The 7546 movement is closest, cheapest and most available.

If it’s anything like a 7546 then a strip and clean of the train will possibly sort out a whole world of hurt. And a clean of the dial side and calendar works of course.
