Is there anything in today's lineup like the old 6138s?

The new Bullheads are quartz, not sure what else they are offering these days.

Well I suppose the Brightz Pheonix would be the "least expensive" like the SAGK001 at almost US$2k... This Ananta is like the direct descendant of the Big Blue 6138-0030 but at US$3k+... hmmmm... There are the Kinetics of course which are 'sort of' mechanical...

Why is there such a product void here in the sub 1k range? Bummer.
I've been on the fence with the SCEB. I've heard it's kind chincy.

I've owned both old and new Bullheads and I feel that Seiko could've spent more resources making the case of the SCEB more 'premium.' IMHO they could've done better with the case finishing. But being a homage quartz chrono at around US$250, I can't complain. I have sold the SCEB though, not because it felt cheap but because I needed to raise funds for a purchase.

I would think watches with the Chinese Seagull ST1940 chronograph movement would get close to your criteria.

I would think watches with the Chinese Seagull ST1940 chronograph movement would get close to your criteria. Stephen That would certainly be my go-to response for an affordable mechanical chrono today, but OP did say he wanted an automatic, and the ST19 is hand winding only - unsurprisingly, as it is very closely based on a Swiss design from the 40s or 50s.

The ST1940 is the auto version of the ST19: Stephen

Handwind or auto, both would fit the bill.
I am going to look into watches with these movements.
What would be some brands I would be looking into?

I don't know much about these movements, but I believe the Seagulls are good quality. Try a web search using the movement designation - ST1940 - and check out forum posts / reviews that come up.

I am very pleased with a VK67 based 'Wired' chronograph I bought last week. True it's quartz and battery powered but the chronograph has mechanical reset, sweeps at 5 beats per second and feels just like an automatic, down to the clunk of the pushers. It cost me less than 100eu and it's a really beautiful and high quality watch. Look at last Saturday's wruw thread for photos.

Seagull do use the ST19 (I don't know about the ST1940 in particular, only just learned it existed!) in some of their own branded watches, but to my eye the styling on all of these is pretty undesirable. The exception was their 1963 PLAAF chrono reissues, but I don't think you can buy those new anymore. Another Chinese company, Alpha, use the ST19 in "Paul Newman" Daytona homage. I've heard mostly good things about the build quality of these, and the value for money is hard to beat, but it depends on how you feel about homages which are really just direct copies with the branding changes. I do think there's an unfortunate lack of nice watches using what is, I'm given to understand, a nice movement. There's a WUS project watch currently in the works which is (yet another) 1963 replica, but I don't know if any are still available.

I really don't like to mention invicta, but they use the NE78 in a few models, which is an unbranded seiko chrono movement.

Hi. Tissot do a 7750 for around 1k also and is very nice. Bear in mind that Swiss Chronos were often pulling $1100/1200 5 or 6 years ago. A member here was very surprised when I got an offer for a 7734 Lanco (read omega/tissot) at $675 recently. Lanco is quite nice and proof not resistant and I did take it. Cheers phil
