Big Green Stalk and The Inseminator
WOW . . . thay sure have filled out. Had no idea this plant flowered!
Question: Do they need to eat bugs to survive or can they survive on water, light and the nutrition in the soil? If they need protein to survive, how do you make sure they get enough?
Inquiring minds want to know (at least mine does)!
In their natural habitat the soil is nutrient poor which is why they evolved to eat bugs.
They can survive with no bugs as long as they get a lot of natural light.
They need to be in damp soil at all times.

Interesting Josh. Thanks for the reply. So I guess you feed them bugs for fun? LOL!!!!

The original Li'l Peter Muncher isn't doing so good.
Same 7 or so leaves as spring.
So I had to get Li'l Peter Muncher 2.X
There a couple of divisions and a couple of small plants in the pot.
So when I repot it after it gets bigger I will have Li'l Peter Muncher 2.1, 2.2, 2.3 and so on.

Cool Plants, This thread has inspired me to get a Plant for myself, What growing medium do you use ? The shopping has started
The plants usually come in LFSM (long fiber sphagnum moss) but I repot all of mine in peat moss with perlite and last year added some silica sand since I had a ton sitting around for the last 20 years but unfortunately I left my bag at my parents house and my father wasted it so this season it was peat moss and perlite.
Unfortunately since most of my plants were outside most of the perlite got washed out during rains.
Don't buy any Miracle grow products or clay pots.
Don't immediately repot your grocery store puppy mill plant.
Give it time to adapt and start growing. I didn't know at the time but J and Shaggy are doing fine this year after dormancy but your results may vary.

The plants usually come in LSSM (long strand sphagnum moss) but I repot all of mine in peat moss with perlite and last year added some silica sand since I had a ton sitting around for the last 20 years but unfortunately I left my bag at my parents house and my father wasted it so this season it was peat moss and perlite.

Mornin Josh, Where do you advise getting my first plant ? I don't want a milled for profit starter.

If I were you I would start with a store bought typical until you get the hang of it so you don't kill a $40 cultivar plant.
I would give you this one since I haven't named it yet but I don't think it would be any fun for you as it is time for it to go to sleep for the winter.

So, Spring is the time to buy ? They go dormant during the winter when outdoors, Indoors they stay year round with temp/humidity/light. Josh, What is your take on a venus in a terrarium ? Sounds easier to care for indoors.

They need to sleep over winter whether indoors or outdoors.
Think of it in terms of normal people vs. Methheads: you need to sleep and you need a vacation, not staying up for 7 days straight tweeking.
VFT's don't need humidity which is what terrariums provide and the reduced air circulation is bad.
Window light is not enough.
Correct 6500K color spectrum is not enough unless you have enough lumens.
I am not sure if the last 4 I bought the other day were just light starved or somehow forced dormant over the summer as the traps are unresponsive and the leaves are short and wide which either indicates spring / fall leaves or lack of light.

Unfortunately a lot of my plants have died over the last 2 years including Lil' Peter Muncher last spring and J and Shaggy this spring.
The ones that didn't completely die divided into extremely small offshoots.
I was watering my plants today and saw this nasty bug hanging there.
Good thing I have a few good watch plants keeping an eye out for intruders.
You don't want half trapped bugs because they will kill that trap / leaf off for some reason so I had to cut this bug in half and feed it to another trap and push this one all the way in with a toothpick.

Pardon my ignorance, but why no Miracle Grow or clay pots? They can’t have any minerals. They require distilled water. The clay has minerals in it as does miracle grow. Venus fly traps are a fickle plant. Bamboo is another that requires distilled water.

I hate succulents.
Everytime you touch them all of the leaves fall off.
The Big Green Stump died 5 times.
The last time the leafless stalk fell over it broke into 2 so I got pissed off and just left it.
2 months later the stalk started budding and now I have a cactus tree.
I'll have to see if I can get a pic at work tomorrow.
I saw these 2 at work today and had to buy them even though they were $4.50 each for a 2" pot when the big 3" pot ones used to be $3.
But these weren't the same crappy ones that have been coming in for the last 3 years.
I almost bought one when I first started TNJ that looked like a square rock but passed and have never seen another one come through the store since then so I figured I better buy these before i never see them again.
Looks like a butt or maybe "something else"
This one looks like some kind of alien mouth with multiple jaws.

Mr cd_god, I have several credits in under grad botany. A little tip: when moving the pots around always rotate then 90 deg clockwise in their new location. For folks in the southern hemisphere, rotate counter clockwise. Plants are very sensitive to the geomagnetic lines of earth. You will be amazed at how much difference it makes!

Are you referring to rotating them daily in regards to the direction of the light source or some other source?

Once a moth or whenever you move them around. It usually takes them 24 hours or so to acclimatize to the new orientation

Is this the right section for an unboxing? A big package arrived today. Lots of bubble wrap. Always a good sign. The items were individually packaged in tubes very well to protect them during transport. Enough already! Some new boys arrived largely inspired by one of our own. Meet “The North Side Crew” From left to right: Big J; Lil’Tube; Sticky and Chomper. Big J is of course named after one of our own. My son helped with the other names. 😁 They are sat in a cm of rainwater and will have a rest on this South facing windowsill for a few days before summer duties near the fruit bowl. Ah yes, they must earn their keep for now!
