It was beautifully sunny and warm yesterday so I took a short walk. It was surreal; all the driveways with cars parked in them and not a sign of the people. It reminded me of scenes from those 'day after' movies just before the zombies come marching out. I had visions of hooded figures pushing bullock carts and shouting 'bring out your dead'.
Considering the exponential increase in the number of people dying from this plague I have to wonder if it doesn't come to that...

Things are going to get worse before they get better. Well, from some of the postings about the 1918 flu pandemic, I think we have a long way to go yet but definitely, we are not at the cusp yet

It is amazing what is going on. Illinois has just extended "Shelter in place" until the end of April. It was to end originally on the 6th. Schools have been shuttered since early march. My daughter, a senior, is going nuts. My mother in law lives in a "retirement" building, that has levels of care. She's fine and has here own "condo", but the facility has been on restrictions since March also. My wife is missing her, as they would be with each other several days a week. They have stopped visitors and are only allowing residents out to see a doctor. Canceling all social programs... One resident has tested positive, although she is in a different "wing". She was only there four days, and they suspect she brought it in with her...So is it there now??
Amazing how much better my gas mileage is coming to work without traffic, I've picked up an honest 3 mpg. Being a creature of habit I would fill up on Saturday mornings on the way into work. The place opens at 6:00 and since traffic was generally light on Saturdays I'd be able to still be on time getting in and there were no lines...The guys that man the pumps, would have the locks off early, and at times I'd be on my way by 5:55! Now they have changed hours and won't open until 7:30...again another disruption in my routine...I know it's small but its comforting to me to be able to do "my thing".
None of our customers are shutting down, they are able to stay rolling, which allows us to stay working, great thing for sure, except for the anxiety of maybe getting it from a coworker and bringing it home...
Read an editorial and watched the guy's interview, he is a credentialed guy from Stanford and pretty respected school of higher learning. He is making the point that had we not ID'd the covid as a novel virus and it ran it's course, we would have thought this was just a "real bad year for the flu" and the increases deaths would be considered "statistical noise", I'd say an error do to rounding...But he says with out more data it is near impossible to tell if we are over or under reacting. The way he sees the numbers he thinks its a gross over reaction, yet because of the limited data this is still the best course of action...I hope he is right.
I have been planing my exit from work as I felt I was just 10 years away. Starting to adjust investments to preserve and be a bit more conservative...I'd set a plan to shift a percentage away from some funds an in to others overtime on a regular schedule. I'm grateful I still have 9-1/2 years to go so I can recover my 25% loss, in under a month. Historically after a crash three years go by and we have "recovered" I've actually started to invest more into my retirement, hoping that the return will grow exponentially.
Some guys are carrying a bit heavier in their EDC kits, but I hope they are just being "overly cautious"...Seeing the Basket ball courts, skate park, and tennis courts full the other day looked like "normal" only to see them empty the next with a squad car parked in the lot...
And this too shall pass, I just don't know what it will pass into. What will be the new normal?

We will get a handle on this virus soon, and in the big picture, the death toll will not be all that terrible. Don't get me wrong, it's not a good thing, but many more folks die every year from other diseases. I'm surprised I've not seen a conspiracy theory, stating it's the government just weeding out the SS recipients. That said, my wife is an RN, and is still heading in to the front lines to work her shifts. May all the healthcare workers stay safe and healthy!

The problem is that this particular, nasty bug is way more contagious than your average flu bug.
There’s 4500 dead as of today....I predict, before it’s all over, that we will see upward of 25,000 deaths if not more...and that number is highly dependent on ALL of the states shutting things down completely for at least 30 days with strict quarantine protocols in place.
I also think the Chinese are lying about how many are dead over there....I have a military friend who has seen satellite photos of China with multiple portable incinerators located all over Wuhan....with bodies stacked high next to each of them....some intelligence people think as many as 80,000+ may be dead in China.
The Chinese government is not exactly known for telling the truth when the truth makes them look bad.
And the healthcare workers are the true heroes during all of this....my daughter is an RN at the local hospital.

We’ve been under a stay at home order in Ohio for a bit over a week, and while I see fewer cars out and about there are people out walking around the neighborhood in much higher numbers than I’ve ever seen. And by and large they are all very respectful of social distancing recs.
Curiously I got a jury summons the other day. Since I’m immunosuppressed still my Dr is writing me a medical excuse since we can’t figure how you would serve on a jury and still observe social distancing recommendations.
My BiL is a surgeon in Indiana. Over 50 providers and staff at the hospital where he works are now under quarantine due to exposure. Since test kits are in such short supply none of them have been tested yet. Neat.

My BiL is a surgeon in Indiana. Is the ICU at his hospital swamped with COVID-19 patients? If so, that's scary.

I'm all for being cautious, and we're adhering to the stay at home, but really what choice do we have other than a trip to the grocery.
I'm still of the belief this is being over hyped somewhat, but guess we'll know for sure in a month or two.
One thing I guarantee is the USA does NOT lead the world in confirmed cases or deaths. That title belongs to that lying communist country known as China, and that piece of Sh*t Tedros at WHO that covers for them should have the virus shoved up his a**.
Thankfully it's getting warmer so I'm spending more time outside doing yardwork, or walking in the neighborhood to feel normal.
This is going to have more damaging effects both mentally and financially to people globally than this virus.
Also, Pandora's Box has been opened, so don't think Governments haven't noticed what they can now get away with when fear is in the air.

I am able to work from home, and have been doing so for about 2.5 weeks now.
Unfortunately, my wife being an RN at Stanford Hospital, is still having to go in for her 3 shifts per week. Thank goodness she is no longer in the ICU, but it still worries me.
I do believe the death toll will increase by quite a bit before we get a proper handle on this.
I also agree the the Chinese government is lying big time, they have been throughout this entire process.

I don't want to call all of this "Pandemic" stuff fake news but just laying the groundwork and roots.
Every year from this day forward there will be another "Global" end of the world something and stall shit out.
The media and "insert the name or your conspiracy group here who runs the world" came out and kept blasting statistics which everyone knows can be manipulated 7 ways to hell using the same numbers to prove whatever your agenda is and kept saying everyone on the planet is going to die so dig a hole and hide in it.
After a week or 2 someone in power forced them to tell the truth, at least here, that all of the deaths were people over 55 years old and had underlying health problems.
Before that the Liberal media had the nerve to post day after day that is was racial and all of the victims were minorities no age or medical history reported.
As posted above it could have been reported as an above average bad flu season.
How many times has this gone down in the past and written off as a 100 year flood or 10 year flood and noone knew any better.
But no need for a pandemic to thin out the population since shit has been quiet for the last 2 weeks up until 4 days ago when people were back to capping each other on the Northside since we were on a record pace before this "incident" this year.
And I already called as soon as it was announced that a reappearance of the Milwaukee Lion from 2017 to keep them in check while the DNC was in town but I guess THEY were watching and THEY had to beat me to it.
Just another day on the Northside.
79-year-old dies in shooting near Palmer & Chambers, homicide investigation underway
MILWAUKEE — The Milwaukee Police Department is investigating a homicide.
Police say they were called to the 3000 block of North Palmer Street shortly before 1:30 p.m. Wednesday. A 79-year-old man was shot and taken to a hospital for treatment. He later died from his injuries.
Officers say this is an active and ongoing investigation. Police are looking for an unknown suspect.
If you have any information, call Milwaukee Police at (414) 935-7360 or Milwaukee Crime Stoppers at (414) 225-TIPS.

The Chinese government has absolutely no clue how many were infected or how many have died from it, but it's certainly much higher than the 3,300 deaths they're currently reporting. You don't completely lock down and seal off an entire province of 60 million people for 3 months from a relatively unknown virus that had killed 17 people (how many that had "reportedly" died when they locked down Hubei on January 23rd) unless: a.) You know something about the infectivity, transmission, or severity of the virus that you're not telling everyone else AND/OR b.) The death rate is much higher than you're letting on. And I agree: The healthcare workers are the heroes who have to dig us out of this mess. My wife is currently in medical school, and while the students haven't been called upon yet to treat COVID-19 patients, it could happen if the healthcare systems become overwhelmed.

+1 on the highly dubious figures out of China. Absolutely no way that Spain and Italy have almost 3 times the deaths with a fraction of the overall population, even given the expanse of land mass.
I can’t help thinking this is something sent down to teach us a lesson about how we’re living our lives (and, no, I’m not a religious person). When you see the difference that has been made to water courses, air quality and so on in only a short space of time, you surely have to ask some serious questions. I can imagine the world being a very different place once all this has (hopefully) been brought under control.
We should all be eternally grateful to our healthcare providers, whether on the front line or working in support functions, our care workers, transport workers and those in retail and logistics helping keep the shelves stocked. And anyone who has stockpiled beyond the reasonable should take a long, hard look at themselves.
One question for our US members - what’s with the dramatic increase in gun/ammunition sales and licence applications?

Yeh; you can't wipe your ass with bullets The guns and ammo are to protect ourselves since the government or police won't now. We've been informed they won't respond to burglary, non-injury traffic accidents, speeding, etc. They are making bigger deals over crowds of 10. If this goes on too long and people run out of money and get desperate, then sh*t will hit the fan. Those "preppers" that people make fun of may end up being the smart ones some day.

I'm not a complete idiot, I preface with, complete. A phrase I heard and remembered from long ago that still applies. "Figures lie and liars figure."
Do I agree with the numbers out of China? Honestly there is no honest way of knowing, saying they are dishonest means that they numbers may be higher, you have to believe that they are lying now...again let say they are, no one can say how much? I doubt the Chinese government could tell you what the real number is anyway...So people saying the numbers don't compare I think we don;t have enough numbers to begin with, to make any scientific assessment.
An explanation I came across for the high incidents of deaths in Italy and the hospitals being overwhelmed. Being that healthcare is socialize they run more efficient and don't have needless inventory, they keep their ICU's at between 95%-98% capacity during the peak flu period in the winter. It takes just a slight increase above normal, for them to become overwhelmed. As I have read, not everywhere in the country have hospitals fallen apart, Mostly where the population is oldest. As for age, I saw numbers stating that the average age of those that died, were 85??? Italy has one of the oldest populations (not anymore) in Europe, which tends to explain the higher number of those that died because of the virus. Italy also as I understand it, has some of the highest numbers of smokers w/respiratory issue, then their neighbors...These all go into account for what is happening.
The sample size is too small to make any real determination that what were doing to flatten the curve is overkill. But taking the chance and doing less, seems like it could possible get out of hand faster then wildfires down-under...
As for guns and ammo going up well those people are johnny-come-lately's and lacked the foresight many of us had back when the Democrats controlled the White House, and made waves trying to reduce what citizens were able to have. There we saw ammo shortages the likes no one had ever seen before. You think getting TP was tough, try buying .22LR ammo. It was nowhere, and when it could be found the gouging was in full swing, profiteers were making a killing. What was a $17 brick (500 rounds) of .22LR was going for $75! and people were buying! How do I know? Because I was "trading" with guys for other ammo. I refused to spend $$$ for ammo I was looking, for when I knew what it was going for before the hysteria, likewise with those I traded with...Sure I could have sold high and then could afford to buy high, but we'd be just honest with each other. Supply eventually returned, prices finally got realistic again...So why now? I'm not in the market any more now than I was before...People are scared and uncertain. Most Americans have never seen empty shelves before. Sure in Prepping for Hurricanes and Blizzards we'd see news of; water, batteries, bread, milk, being whipped out in stores, but never anything like this.
Stay safe everyone.

Yeh; you can't wipe your ass with bullets - Yes you can
- Not as effective as toilet paper
- You can also make a list with them
- See?
