It is October 17th (somewhere)
Day 17 of the October WRUW daily theme.
Today's theme is “Wear a watch on a nylon strap” like a NATO or Rhino or ZULU or whatever else people want to call them
All of the stories I have shared make me feel old.
No one else around in the hobby back in 2001
There is a saying "Preaching to the choir" which means everyone else in the room (or forum) is in the same boat and on the same page and knows what you are talking about.
I feel I am "Bidding against the soda machine"
I will save the rest of my rant / story for my watch post.

This 6105-8000 was a mess when i bought it and became my first attempt at a rebuild! The only parts that came from other watches were the minute hand and the Seiko logo on the dial, a NOS second hand, crystal and crown were found to complete the rebuild. I striped the dial and sanded the indices, polished the hands and then bought a kit to rhodium plate the dial. The case was hand filed to remove the dings and scratches, spun in a lathe to get the top surface finish using scotch-brite, the sides were hand filed then sanded and finally polished as was the case back. Peter K rebuilt the movement and assembled the watch with new gaskets, once all back together it's still one of my favourite watches and very comfortable to wear! Although it needs a new crystal...

This'll be a present for my friend in December 2023, so I don't really wear it. I just put it on indoors from time to time just to see that everything is up and running. Wouldn't mind having one of these myself.

I detest NATO and ZULU straps with a passion. All those bloody metal rings, a strap that’s about a foot long that needs tucking in or folding over, and they feel just awful on the wrist. I get why people like them - they’re cheap, plentiful and can add a dash of colour to an otherwise drab-looking timepiece. And I like how they look on other people’s watches. But, for me personally, I just can’t bring myself to wear them. So, as a compromise, I’m wearing this fabric-strapped (albeit with a bit of leather…) TIMEX Expedition.

I don’t have that many nylon straps. You’ve seen the chicken nato already which at least has a little bit of kudos as it is not one that you can buy. So I chose another, that lives on a watch I hardly ever wear. I think that this is an AM dial and rehaut mod although I didn’t know that when I bought it back in my early days of buying anything that was cheap. What am I talking about early days for, that’s still part of my collection strategy! And I forgot about this one when we did the modded watch thread last week. Although as I didn’t mod it I’m not sure if it met the criteria in any case. It might not be the best watch but it does give a little bit of sunshine. Especially on its magnificent nylon nato!

I have a few of these woven nylon bands (with a regular buckle) that are quite handy.

I have to admit I'm more aligned with leffemonster on NATO straps, but have grown to like this one as I think it goes perfectly with the watch. I often think I'm going to shorten it so I can get rid of the kite tail it has but I never seems to be able to bring myself to do it. The 1978 vintage 6309-7049 Rescue Turtle!

I have to pass on this one. Don't like them. Don't have any. To compensate I'll continue with yesterday's task: Mind the rust in between 'waterproof' and '100% wasserdicht'.

Today's Seiko golf tip of the day: when you are square at dress, the leading edge of the clubface is perpendicular to the lines of your shoulders, hips, and feet.
Yesterdays Seiko golf tip of the day: hold the club the way you would your steering wheel
There's that snow they were talking about
Fun ride in to work today
If you have ever been to an auction or worse yet bid online there is a whole lot of shady shit going on with shill / fake bidders and the auctioneer.
There used to be a video online with Reggie Jackson at a Barrett Jackson auction where he is up at the auctioneer's podium selling one of his cars and there is a hot mic during the bidding where the auctioneer admits Barrett Jackson is faking the bids when Reggie says sell it for the current price and the auctioneer admits it is a shill bidder and that "there is no money in the room"
Of course they paid to scrub the video from the internet.
And the old Network 54 Seiko Citizen forum and all of the memories and knowledge also got scrubbed from the internet.
Anywho back in the day the only nylon straps that I remember were Rhino brand straps.
They were sold on the MWR (Military Watch Resource) forum store.
They had a patch on one side with a Rhino logo.
Then they came out with a "2 Piece Rhino" and I bought a couple.
I put then on my Seiko divers but they were really stiff and never broke in.
Then came the marketing of Zulu straps, Nato straps, seat belt straps, and so on.
Then came the 99¢ including shipping Nato straps on Ebay from China.
I bought a ton of them and beat the shit out of them at TNJ and I have to say not one has worn excessively or died.
Unfortunately Corona came and killed them.
My only gripe with those straps was they were too short.
It seems the "Big 2" nylon strap sellers have the same straps (at least cosmetically) for sale but now an inch long for $10 vs. $1.
If any of the "Big 2" nylon strap sellers wants to donate any of those straps for me to review I am open to it.
I was all ready to wear my "The next you see this watch it will be in front of a Welcome To _____ sign" but realized it is still sitting at my watchmasters house waiting for me to pick it up.
I'll have to scoop it up before I leave
15
I like this watch and this strap.
As a matter of fact I have 2 of each.
One of the "Big 2" sellers is Blu Shark and they have an ongoing offer of buy a few get a few free.
Great straps but like every nylon strap I have to "neuter" it cut off the useless extra appendage.
The other "Big 2" seller is Crown & Buckle and they offer to neuter your strap before they send it to you.
I was planning on doing a review of both some day but as you know life gets in your way.

Saw the theme, and recalled that I had Seiko models that actually came on a nylon/fabric type strap. Thing was, I had to find this one. It was in the last place I looked. I'm not sure I have ever even worn this... Sort of a big brother to this model, after receiving thought it was a bit small so I recall looking for something similar that was larger. Don't think I have worn this one either. These used to be a dime a dozen.

Only NATO I have and I cut the length because I can't stand folding them in their keepers. I am not a fan of NATOs but this one from Uncle (FKA Uncle Seiko) is comfortable and actually works fine with this watch.

My watch today has another curious and somewhat unique distinction - it can ONLY be worn with a nato style strap! I first saw this watch in an advertorial in MotorTrend magazine (I know, who reads magazines anymore, right?). I was going through a microbrand phase in my watch collection, and this one ticked a lot of boxes. It offered what I felt was a unique two-piece case design I had not seen before, with a strong car culture tie-in from the founder of the company. This is the MHD (Matthew Humphries Design) SA2 Launch Edition, number 22 out of 100: If this was a Panerai, they would call this the “sandwich dial” - that is the dial is cutout and the lume is on a disc below the dial - instead of painted on the dial. What we have here is a 3 piece dial, counting the inner bezel. I had a rocky start with this watch. It was the first watch that I had imported (England to the USA), and of course it got stuck in customs. I was given one of those mind boggling forms asking me to value the case, bracelet and movement separately. I had no idea so I put 1/3 value on each. This led to a significant import duty (for the value of the watch) and worse yet - someone must have thought, wait a minute… these nato straps are worth how much?? And stolen them out of the box. When I finally received the watch, it was without strap(s), rattling around loosely in the box. I believe it was in the possession of DHL the whole time and right or wrong tend to still blame them. Matthew (the founder and company name sake) was quick to make it right - and sent me new nato straps. As cool as this watch is, the unique nato-only lug design and the included “luxury” thick “seat belt material”, double-pass nato straps made it wear oddly on my thin wrists. It wasn’t until I found a great, thin, single-pass nato for this watch that I really started to like it. You need a wrist wide enough for this to wear flat and look/feel right. I would say 7.25” or bigger would be perfect. This is another example of a watch that taught me the importance of the strap/bracelet, and how it can really make or break the deal.

Started with the smaller and thought "Heck I can pull off a larger one" double entendre not intentional. Also the smaller watch is what I posted as the Mod watch as the dial feet broke and I went a different route.
