Inherent Vice - Packed with details, smart and funny, perfectly captures the dazed and confused feeling of never quite being up to speed with what's going on around you. Next, something shorter at last - an original edition of the third Quarry novel.

The Dealer (aka Quarry's Deal) - The most ridiculous plot of all the Quarry novels I've read so far, makes James Bond's efforts seem plain lethargic when it comes to bedding the femme fatales. Now, true crime that isn't.

RIP Kurt Vonnegut: November 11, 1922 to April 11, 2007
It's hard to believe it's been ten years...

His Bloody Project - The account of an historical Scottish triple murder presented through official documents and contemporary journalist's reports, only it's all fiction. Clever, and a surprisingly riveting read. Next, beyond the astonishing Last Exit..., Selby didn't write many novels, but some believe this one inspired Ellis' brilliant American Psycho.

I just finished Hillbilly Elegy by J.D. Vance.
Next I'm probably going to return to familiar territory by making another trip through Blood Meridian by Cormac McCarthy. Once every couple of years or so I find myself in the right frame of mind for that book - and I think I'm there right now...

Demon - cool idea, but the plot is too straight and narrow, and the prose style gets tedious by the end. Next, talking of cool, there's none more so than Philip Marlowe.

Re-reading all of the Ian Fleming "JAMES BOND" novels at the moment. Well, on those days I catch the train to work that is.

I just finished re-reading Blood Meridian by Cormac McCarthy for the first time in about 5 years. It is pretty much the most violent and disturbing piece of literature I have ever read.
I've been pondering what to get in to next, and Saul's post inspired me to stay with "violent and disturbing" - last night I ordered a pre-read copy of King Leopold's Ghost off of ebay. It's supposed to arrive Thursday and I'll probably delve in to it as soon as I get my hands on it.
Right now, however, I'm wading through the review of 600+ pages of Specifications for a water booster station, elevated storage tank and several miles of water main we're getting ready to build in my County.

The Little Sister - The quips remain razor sharp, and the plot is more confusing than ever, but this later Chandler novel lacks some of the charm of the earlier installments. Next, the first volume of the PKD short story canon.

Beyond Lies the Wub - Fun for SF fans, but being the earliest of PKD's published works, these stories are dated and a little naive. There's four more volumes of this chronological anthology, so better is to come. Next, mutants!

The Chrysalids - There's a whole load packed into this short but powerful novel, a post apocalyptic adventure that also asks, what is the true image of God? Another quick read next:

In the last week, I:
Finished Leopold's Ghost Re-read (once again for the ?? time) H. S. Thompson's Hell's Angels - A Strange and Terrible Saga Read Stephen Mitchell's translation of Gilgamesh
Right now I'm studying some photography books in an effort to improve my abilities in wrist watch photography.
I'll probably revisit Zen and the Art of Motorcycle Maintenance some time in the next week or so. I return to it every 2-3 years - it helps get my mind right for performing tedious work.

Through Evilbay I found a provider of cheap Kindle books. Not sure where he gets them, but some have minor spelling mistakes and (very) occasional paragraph malfunctions. I can live with that ! Got these two for £4.

I'm with you on Hell's Angels, great book, I'd happily read that again. I wouldn't hurry to have to labour through Zen again though, or is that what you're saying, ha?
