Concrete Island - In some ways this shorter and simpler story captures everything that makes an essential Ballard novel in an easier to believe and more disturbing form than the longer works. Next, I bought this by mistake, thinking it was the sequel to the Ophiuchi Hotline (that I read back in Jan). It isn't, but it is related so that's cool.

The Barbie Murders - Some really enjoyable and fun stories here, with plenty of cool ideas, though some themes were a bit overdone. Loosely linked to the Ophiuchi Hotline as it turned out. Next, another whopper from this year's theme of films-I've-not-seen.

Next, another whopper from this year's theme of films-I've-not-seen. I hope you enjoy this (and the other books in the series) as much as I did, as they are excellent. I confess that I experienced them in audio book format. The "follow up" book by David Lagerkrantz, The Girl in the Spider's Web, which I actually read, is also excellent. The original Swedish films are pretty true to the books and are very long !! Don't watch the Daniel Craig version first as it will spoil it for you.

My reading list has been mucked up by the next book going AWOL (my man cave is big and there are LOTS of books in it !) and the one after that is book 3 in series and I haven't read (don't have) No. 2 yet. So it's this one in the interim: I did think about trying to organise them all alphabetically, but that would be a massive undertaking.

Don't watch the Daniel Craig version first as it will spoil it for you. I thought it was well written and hugely enjoyable. It starts slowly, but builds to a series of increasingly explosive finales. I'm sure I'll read the sequels. My criticism is that it mixes realism with Hollywood nonsense. The first half is Wallander, but the second half is Oceans Eleven. Salander (she of the tattoo) isn't a believable character, one minute she's a damaged adolescent, the next she's part Sherlock Holmes and part comic book superhero. Maybe it's just me, I thought the plot was decent, but the way it plays out stretches credibility too far. Next, the girl on the cover looks like our eldest daughter when she was a kid.

While hunting for the next book on my list, I found this, that I reckon I first read about 35 years ago. I'm enjoying it just as much as the first time round. Though it's very dated it's hilarious and very well written.

I watched the movie "King Rat" on TCM last week, so now I'm re-reading the book.

Never Let Me Go - Not sci-fi, but reality with a creepy twist. Compelling and slowly overwhelming with emptying sadness. Excellent. Next up:

Not been posting much lately as I've been on a reading binge ! Just before my holiday I discovered I could have a free month of Kindle Unlimited, so downloaded most of Guy Bellamy's books to take with me. Trying to cram them all into a month. Also got a couple from the book cabinet in the hotel we stayed in (presumably left behind/finished with books). Took this one with me (real book) This one from hotel book cabinet: And this one: Both finished and returned. Kindle books: And currently on this one:

I am soooooo far away from achieving my goal of reading all the books in my collection that I have not read yet. I blame my favourite authors for writing more books ! This one on Kindle: And this one (real book):
