Well, if you piss off the WIS community, they won't help you with a restoration…..so in his defence, no one would help him with the parts so he had to sell off the watch to recoup the outlay. I do know of folk that had the parts he needed or new where to get them, but wouldn't help due to his history.
I've an acquaintance that does this with classic bikes, buys them cheep gets everyone to help/volunteer restore the bike and then sells it for a profit. Only got caught once, never again!

I've an acquaintance that does this with classic bikes, buys them cheep gets everyone to help/volunteer restore the bike and then sells it for a profit. Only got caught once, never again! I gave him all the guidance I could, and I didn't have any of the parts. However, I know that his main goal is flipping, and if I had access to the quite rare parts I don't know that I would have sold them to him knowing that all he would have done was to have used them to add to the bottom line. I'll help a collector, a fellow WIS, a restorer, to bring a watch back from the dead. I won't tap my own collection of rare spares to help a non-WIS make more money. Back more than a decade ago, I was big into WW2 re-enacting. Silly, but fun. Mostly it was getting drunk in the woods and smoking cigars. Anyway, we had a guy join the unit who bought a WW2-era truck, ideal for conversion into it's WW2 configuration. We put in a shit-ton of work into that truck, weekend after weekend. Engine, transmission, bodywork, paint, wiring, wheels, building a whole bed for it, etc. It would have been ideal for moving unit equipment, for trucking us into the field, for camp displays etc. But it never seemed to make it to any events. Weird. Never. Then one day we're at an event, and there's the truck, hooray! We go up to it, and hear some guy talk about how he'd just bought it after "the old owner put a ton of work into it.". Mother. phuker. Our guy had originally bought the truck for $2000. He sold it for ten. thousand. dollars.

This is the sort of Wabi i like, used but not abused and for $700ish it's a good buy. Heck yeah, that'll work.

Interesting story. I was not aware of the history. Explains the tone of this thread better. Much more than just flipping or parting out. I guess this behavior happens everywhere.

This guy's reputation now precedes him.

The one on the left with the black crown belonged to a royal navy rescue diver instructor and was his work watch for many years. I hope my pictures show the different colour of the TiN coating...
