There was talk recently, about the fantastic deal the Uncle got on a Golden Tuna. Well, I see it is now parted out for sale on the bay. What's your take on this practice, okay with it, or feel it's a shame?

In all honesty.......Uncle "Larry" is a Fukin retard and has no other connection to watches other than to profit from them at any cost. Even if it means tearing a good collectible watch apart and piecing it out.
like I said......the guy is a Turd of the first order

I counseled him against tearing it apart, but the bottom line is the bottom line.
I know the watch is missing some key pieces, specifically the hour wheel etc that fit the larger-aperture 7549 hands, and that for him was the breaking point at which the watch was worth more in pieces than it was as a complete watch, which was the point. He's in it for the money, not the watches, as far as I can see. This isn't a hobby or a labor of love, it's all business.
I'm not defending it, it's not a choice I would have ever made, but it wasn't my watch or choice to make.

He scores desirable pieces for lunch money then either flips them or vivisects them and sells the organs online. Not sure but it may be that he is not a WIS nor a collector but rather uses this hobby as a way to bring income to his ministry/church/cult/whatever. No matter; it's still a bit of a sacrilege  Oh well, they love him on TOF  |

If you have the time you can quadruple your money or more if you can wait long enough for a sale when you part something out.
The hard to find parts or easily worn parts sell fast and the rest you have to sit on.
I made $10 hustling a pair of lawnmower wheels today that took 10 seconds to take off of a scrap mower.
If I had tired to "restore" it I would have been into it for an hour of my time, $40 in parts, and lucky if I sold it for $75 netting me $35 and out an hour of my life.
$10 in 10 seconds is a much better deal.

Its a tough one. At first glance all it needs is a new crown and the correct hands but obviously it goes a bit deeper than that. If he hasn't got the patience or skills to get it going then why not part it out? I'd prefer it if he kept it together and sold it all as one lot but ultimately its his call...

I don't even know who it is with this uncle fellow but it's a free country, he's making cash, collectors are getting parts to restore other Seikos, and the value of the remaining watches goes up with supply and demand as the world now has a supply of one less.

Never been a big fan of this fellow.
I remember not too long ago he was on one of the forums whining about the fact that the seller of a really nice 6105 he had won on Ebay for a good price had backed out of the deal and refused to sell it to him.
Everyone on the forum (and also the seller, apparently) knew his plan with the watch was just to immediately flip it on Ebay for a profit...probably before he even had it in his hands.
The seller probably said to himself, "If there is more profit to be made, why sell the watch to this guy? Why not relist it and make that extra profit myself?"
Sucks when a seller backs out of a deal, but when your motives are that transparent you are kinda bringing it on yourself!

It's business ...parts in this case will probably bring in more cash than an incomplete whole...do I like it ?,no, if I was looking for parts I'd be over the moon.
Maybe there's a beautiful tuna waiting for a bezel somewhere and make another WIS really happy.

I don't see the harm in parting out an incomplete watch, especially if you're sitting on a lot of money invested and don't have the desire or the patience to search for the one last piece. Besides your one incomplete watch could complete several others. Perhaps if more people parted out their incompletes rather than squirreling them away in a drawer for a decade, we'd have more available parts at cheaper prices and more complete specimens.
As for people making money off the hobby, I'd rather see someone make it by parting out rather than low balling and harassing honest sellers for below market values.

If you are a skilled craftsman in your trade and have access to the parts needed and can wrech on your own stuff you can find a project and fix it and make a buck.
If you have to pay for the donor watch, pay for the parts, and pay someone to do the work for you you will not come out ahead unless it is a money no object I have to have this watch type of project.

If I recall correctly, that's what he paid for the lot...so he got his money back on that one + 11 other watches.

It would have been easier if Jonathan was still around, but it could still have been doable. The problem is that the missing parts were very specific to the 7549 movements. No other models used the ones that were gone. But it could have been done, sure. I will switch to my Golden today, in mourning. |
