I'm looking forward to this one to replace the one I sold, assuming I had a replacement lined up. I didn't, as it turns out. Anyway, just picked this up as non-working. Clearly original if I'm any judge. And like Aaron says, short hands on a Yachtman, something I used to say didn't happen. 6138-0011 "Resist", March 1971

Now that's a nice find! Hopefully. The tiny spot of reddish darkness at the pivot on the sweep hand worries me. That's where rusty water would bleed up from the movement through the center wheel pinion and cannon pinion, and pulled up the by chronograph wheel pinion, if water got into the right places. We'll see. The dial / hands / case look to be just about right.

My two 6138-6009s are an amazing TWENTY-FOUR units apart. Total. 226264 and 226288. They must have been on the line the same day. Yet one has French / English, the other Spanish / English.

Its a small world my 6138-0011 'resist' is also March 1971. Serial no. 137020. I got it off Ebay UK. I happened to wear it yesterday and they a one of Seiko's finest, everything is right about it. BTW: mine has long hands:-)

Regarding hand length and dial variety combinations, I wrote this following up for the Dr. Seiko database: seikoholics.yuku.com/sreply/236/Seiko-6138001x-BigSmall-Eye-style#.VBKk-KNpvNEHope this helps. I can't guarantee it covers everything with 100% accuracy, but it's my best attempt at codifying the variants based on available evidence to me as of a few years ago. Since then, I've not had time to do further research though.

Lol! Beautiful watch, Spencer. I think you will whip that one into shape in no time, especially since the NOS bezels which used to be unobtanium are now pretty easy to find on Ebay. That one looks like it needs very little, and the only thing I question in terms of originality is the sweep. But some early 6138/9 models had a bit of colored lacquer in the center of the sweep...maybe that is what we are seeing? For some reason, I actually prefer the early examples of this model. IIRC, the impetus for sorting out the whole "short hands" thing on the Yachtman was the watch below, which I probably got 8-10 years ago. I just couldn't imagine why it would have needed it's hands replaced.

Wondered what the high bidders max was.

The 6138-001x is so magnificent it's almost cliche to say so. This wonderfully restored Nov '71 -0017, 1N9610, is a pride and joy. Took the combined efforts of Lew B, Jonathan K, Jack A, Spencer K (sounding like an AA roster) and some nos parts from Australia and Israel... Here is how it started...

Serial number says mines a Nov '70 (starts 0Nxxxxx). Has the short hands, resist dial and a proof back. Came from the original owner in Canada. When I asked what the salespuke told him that model was called originally he said a "Seiko chronograph' and didn't know anything about the name Yachtman. He remembers seeing nothing to do with Yachts near the watch so I'm going to call mine a UFO as I'm into Sci-fi or possibly I'll call it Fred.

The name came from a 1970-ish magazine ad by a company called Unimetrics, a US-based marine supply company that sold Seikos through their catalogs. They dubbed it the "Yachtman" simply as a way to sell chronographs...to sailors! It's not too tough to sell chronographs to race car drivers, but if you wanna sell them to sailors you may need a hook.
